DVD Recorders

I am thinking about getting a DVD recorder so I can transfer old VHS tapes to DVD. Does anyone on here have one? When you go to burn a dvd do you have to do it one sitting? What I mean is, is there a way to pause the DVD while your burning if you need to change VHS tapes or once you hit the record button it goes until the disc is filled up?

Can you record TV shows straight to DVD? What about programming the DVD recorder to come on at certain time and record a certain show?

At a later date, I will probably get Tivo so I wont have to use up blank dvd's to record shows with.

Now is there anything that I could pick up at say Radio Shack or some where like that, that I could use between the VCR and the DVD recorder to help clean up the image? I have some tapes that were only shot about 7-8 years ago and the quality of those tapes now in 2004 sucks!

Re: DVD Recorders

We own a standalone DVD deck and let me tell you their expensive. I think your better buy awhole new computer just for DVD dubs. I think you might be able to get one now for less than $400 I think. I'm not sure since its been 4years since we got ours. Ours cost about $1000+ I think. Just do some research on the net. If it still cost too much then get a new com dedicated for DVD burning.

Here's some info about DVD recorders on Philips site:

And Pioneer's:

One thing to consider is the supported DVD format. Philips only supports DVD+R +R/W and Pioneer DVD -R -R/W. I prefer the -R format. Philips fills a lot of space on their site promoting +R but that's probably because they are stuck on that standard.

Here's a good site DVD info site. They also list recorders and players and supported formats:
