DVD+R or DVD-R?

Do you use DVD-R or DVD+R ?
I always use DVD+R for everthing, but seems like the availability of +R/RW is not getting all that popular. I know DVD-R has been around much longer, but DVD+ has been out for awhile. Seems like all these electronic companies want to destroy DVD+Alliance(led by Phillips, with some small companies), then skip to dual layer DVD-.

I read so many magazine articles on how DVD+R is superior to DVD-R(lossless linking, both CAV and CLV writing etc.).
Then why is it so hard to find DVD+ compatable DVD Players or DVD recorders?
I want to buy my father a standalone home DVD recorder, but seems like Phillips is the only decent company making DVD+R/RW compatable recorders(and some other smaller companies I don't trust )

Re: DVD+R or DVD-R?

I can only use DVD-R with my G5 Superdrive. What are the DVD+R's used for? I always see them in the stores but then everything like DVD players and the like take the -R's.

Re: DVD+R or DVD-R?

I bought a stand alone Sony RDR-GX7 that records DVD+RW -RW and -R When I burn the DVD+RW, I know it can be returned and used again! I usually burn 65% DVD-R and 35% DVD+RW on average for my customers! I don't use DVD+R ........

Unclemort,
Does Sony RDR-GX7 burn DVD+R?
I hear it doesn't.
It is really strange that it supports +RW, but not +R.

Re: DVD+R or DVD-R?

Both DVD-R and DVD+R have reached a point where they're compatible with about 90% of players.  Those 10% of players may be different for each, though.

I know of several DVD recorders which use DVD+R.

Most tests I've seen show that DVD+R has a (very) slight advantage in compatibility.  DVD+Rs also had, initially, faster write speeds.

As for quality, there's no difference.  And most new burners can burn both, so the *any* difference really is moot.

I believe, though, that the first dual-layer burners are based on DVD+R.

Re: DVD+R or DVD-R?

Chi_Red, No the Sony GX7 does not burn DVD+R! I will usually start burning a multi-titled project in DVD+RW so I don't have to throw the disc away if I screw up! Definitely saves $$! This is of course is if I'm not using my mac for fancier projects which are burned in DVD-R ! I find that most DVD players in my neck of the woods [ based on my customers and what local shops offer] have a better chance of playing DVD-R! In 2 or 3 years, who knows if we all haven't changed over to a completely new format beyond the current doublesided DVD's???
