DVD-R is more compatible than +R since it was out before. However with modern day dvd players being so inexpensive the higher percentage has a fairly new one so both should work in the majority of players.
Bitrate can be tricky at times. I found that VOB works best for most players versus constant. You DVD software should offer the option of Constant or Variable.
Manual labeling is a drag for sure..if you want to have a better solution buy the printable media and use one of the new Epson DVD/CD printers out on the market. They are not that expensive either.

..ill be picking up a new dual layer burner (for dual layer uh..8.4 or whatever gig discs) in a couple days here. it burns + or - or whatever method you want. seems most are going that way now, but the new dual layer tech stuff is only in the + side of the camp right now , so im thinking that the + sid might start taking more ground but they say the ones burning in - should be out in the not too distant future.. so .. well i guess this is a pointless post then.

hehe iam, are you gonna buy the new Lacie or go for Sony? Maybe you could give us some feedback on the compatibility you will get from this new DVD+R9 burner. It certainly might be a good solution for backing up DVDs, but i am not sure if it's going to be as compatible as other formats for mass diffusion (such as the very high % of DVD-R compatibility)?

at only 85.00 its the highest rated new dual leyer burner out there. ive read nothing but absolutely grea reviews about it, and the price cant be beat.. its cheaper than buying a single layer one!! its just updated firmware for their last version single layer burner.
but all the independent reviews rate this one higher than the competitors, and buyers are thumbs way up. i havent heard of anyone making a single coaster on it yet. compatability is rated at 100% so far from any review i ve found for playback in a set-top consumer DVD player. the dual layer disks in computer DVD roms..its not so great, but thats cause they need new firmware.. all the newer drives read it fine, and the older ones read it after firmware updates. but anyway i would only use it for my own backups, and making set top DVDs. and the new cpus will work with it as they come off the line anyway. if you want mass production then i could just send it into a replication house. it burns + or - or whatever you want-all formats!.. cept dual layer (+r9)is only in the + for now.
beleive me, ive done my research.... and all signs point to this product. im not going to pay more money to have sony or lacie on the front of the same thing. ..i can buy a new second one at a higher speed when they come out, and probably still spend less.

.it is -r compatible .. it burns in + or - .. but there just isnt a - mode developed yet for burning the dual layer disks .. only in +. it should get here today. i'll throw it in ,and play with it right away im sure. i dont have too much time but i can burn some old projects if nothing else.

uhh.. i gues i wont have any time to play with it today.. my wife left the house to get some stuff for lunch, and fedex came and left.. of course.. as always.
illl have to try and squeeze in picking it up after 5:00 tonight, but i wont have time to enjoy it then .. oh well

got it. installled it in 5 min, went without a hitch, XP recognized it right away, and i had my first DVD from it burned out of sonic reel DVD full version using AC3 encoded audio in another 5 or so min at 8x speed. Its just a shorter DEMO type DVD. works great on every player and DVD-ROM i could think to try it on as i was out and about at different places, i tried it on all the players. (me: "uh.do you have a DVD player here?..can i use it real quick?)..all of them played it without a hitch. havent burned anything double layer yet. no need to till i finish my new feature. but yeah it is a no brainer. the thing works awsome, and the price cant be beat.
