DVD Player Won't Read Disk

hey all,

i just finished burning a dvd with dvdstudiopro2, and i'm having problems playing it in my dvd player. this is the first time that i've used the program to make a dvd, so i'm not exactly sure where the problem is. after i burned the disc, i had no problems playing it in the apple dvd player, but my sony dvd player says that it can not play this disc. the sony is about a year and a half but should be able to play dvd-r. is it just a compatibility issue? the discs i'm using seem pretty dinky. they're by a company called khypermedia. i'm guessing that it's probably crappy dvds that are to blame, but i just wanted to see what others thought might be the issue.

thanks

sb

Welcome to home-burnt DVD hell. There are no easy answers. Homemade DVDs are simply not a very reliable, compatible thing to do. You'll find some homeburnt DVDs will work in some players perfectly, and not in others, yet others will work in the supposed not-working player...

... although they will almost always work in a computer DVD player.

The only thing I can say is a) use the best, most compatible media you can get (I've had the best luck with Taiyo Yuden white inkjet-printable DVD-R, and b) don't put a stick-on label on the disc, and c) don't push the limit of the bitrate, you may find better compatibility if you lower the bitrate some.

But no matter what you do, it's a nightmare.

One way to test if it is just a crappy DVD is to buy a decent one and re-burn the project without making ANY changes.
I've had good luck with Ridata.

What model Sony player do you have? I usually burn my project first to a RW to test menu links and stuff, then once I've got it looking like I want, burn to -R's.

As above ... it's a headache. I have found though, that if it doesn't play on one of me 'GOOD' players, it will probably play on a cheap **** one ???
