hey all,
i did a search on this and couldnt find anything, so forgive me if this is a repeated thread. What brand of dvd's are you all using to burn your projects from vegas 5? I will be starting my own business very soon and dont want to get too many discs returned because they wont play in certain set top players.I know -R is supposed to be the best bet for compatibility, but what brand do you guys recommend? Maybe Rush from EVS may have some input on this? I will be using the inkjet printable discs as I have the Epson r300 printer. Thanks everyone.

Re: dvd - or + compatible players

Personally, for distribution I always use Verbatim 4x DVD-R inkjet printable. They have also really come down in price recently, so there is no reason not to use them. Since I have started using them over 1 year ago I have had 100% success in all my weddings and other distrobutions. But now that I said that I have just completely jinksed myself so I will have to be switching brands again. thanks alot! ;D

Re: dvd - or + compatible players

I really wouldn’t get so wrapped up in +R vs. –R. People swear by both. I use both, and compatibility is about the same. Advantages for me for +R are price and burn speed.

You won’t go wrong with Verbatim. But there are other high-quality brands, too.

Re: dvd - or + compatible players

I would mostly agree David. I use DVD+R for backup, becasue they are slightly cheaper but just as high quality. But the only DVD's that I have found to fail, at least in my area, and my experience have all been DVD+R's. Maybe it is just the DVD players in my region, but when I find something that works I don't want to mess with it. But I have heard the same, some say that DVD-R are better, some say that +R rock. I guess the best thing you could do is have both on hand, if someone says that the DVD isn't working just burn it on the other one.

Re: dvd - or + compatible players

That's probably the best way to go. As pretty much all drives burn both now, there's no reason not to.

Re: dvd - or + compatible players

thanks guys.Sorry if I jinxed anyone. You have my sincerest apologies! :D
Anyway, I just burned my own wedding on to a -R and it worked on three different players, except for my parents dvd player, which is a Sony about 1 year old.My burner is a sony, I have a newer sony player in my entertainment system, worked fine there. I dunno ???
Anyway, do you guys prefer a disc with a slower burn speed, such as a x4 or a x2? And is it ok to burn a disc at the slowest possible speed available even if you can burn one that is a x 8? I Hope these questions make sense, I have about 8 years of shooting and nonlinear editing experience, but Im somewhat new to burning dvd's, and I just want to make sure before I go selling my services to people that I am not giving them something that wont work on there system. Thanks again!
David

Re: dvd - or + compatible players

Hi David, I have two drives that I use, a +R for backup, and a -R for distro. I have also had better luck in my area with -R which seem more compatible with older players. The new ones will play anything, but I have a 6-year old RCA player that I use to test DVD's before I send them out. If it can play them, anything can. ;D To this day, it has always played -R, but has been iffy on the +R.

As far as brand, our most successful (Lowest percentile of returns or defects), and also my personal favorite, is Verbatim. And as mentioned the new price drop has made them MUCH more affordable. They used to cost 300% more.

As far as speed, I have been told by our media specialist Ryan that 4x is the fastest safe speed for video right now. Dunno why, but all his advice has always worked. He's like our "Media Grandma" who knows most everything media. ;D (How 'bout that fer proper English)

Re: dvd - or + compatible players

EVS is hard to beat with the new verbatim price. Plus they are reliable. Just got a batch last week and great service as usual.

Re: dvd - or + compatible players

Thank you very much for the info Rush, and everyone else as well. Greatly appreciated.
David
