DVD > MPEP STREAMCLIP > QUICKTIME (why so large a file?)

This question may seem a bit naive but...

I have footage on dvd that I want to upload for i'net use.

I ripped the footage from the dvd with Mpeg Streamclip then exported it to Quicktime. The file is huge!

How can I get this to be, say, under 1gb?

It's just SD footage.

Thanks!

Quicktime is not a file type. It is a file container. And inside that container you can put everything from Uncompressed video (over 1GB per minute) to hugely compressed types that make what you ripped off the DVD seem massive).

FIle size is directly proportional to the bit rate of the codec you choose. The Mpeg2 files on a DVD are no more than 9Mbps. Sites like Youtube and Vimeo compress this to below 3Mbps. Even $500 camcorders record at 14-24 Mbps. Uncompressed SD is going to be about 440 Mbps.

So to directly answer your question, you need to convert in Mpeg Streamclip to a file format suitable for uploading. And whatever you put in that quicktime file was NOT a good choice.

I don't use Mpeg Streamclip to prepare my uploads. I am generally doing that from an NLE. But in this case, you'd likely be looking for the option Export to Mpeg4 and using an h.264 codec.

What's a good to do it from your NLE, say, FCP?
