DVD MPEG2 - Bitrate<>Time Calculation

Hi everybody!
I am working on approx. 2 hours video which I have to render out to DVD MPEG2. So, would anybody tell me how to calculate the bitrate in Sony Vegas settings, so that to fit to one 4.70GB DVDisc? Especially I am confused about what values to enter for maximum, normal and minimum bitrate when using VBR. Any ideas?

Couple of options -

#1 - Use a bitrate calculator - there are several available online - mine is a widget for my macbook pro and will calculate VBR as well. Remember include all your media in the total running time though.

#2 - Bring an .avi or like file (master render file) into DVDA and use the "Optimize" button and let DVDA figure it out for you. I'll tend to do this quite often as I always do a master rendered file for archive but I've heard that the encoder in DVDA may not be as up-to-date as the encoder in Vegas. Not sure if that's the case but wanted to present the second option as well.

Unless you're using a DVD9 though, you're going to take quite a hit in compression to get 2 hours on to a normal DVD. Dual-layer discs will let you render at as high a bitrate as you could.

Yeah, doing the compression in Vegas is better in two ways -- it's better at the actual compression, as mentioned, but doing it properly in Vegas also means it doesn't have to be re-rendered in DVD Architect, which is a big time-saver, especially if you have to redo the disc. (Smart Prepare helps, but it's not comprehensive.)
