DVD marketing bologna!! WTF!!!??

Ok, early on when the DVD media came out, there was ton of talk about how they will put all these fun things on DVDs, differnet angles, that u can make your own edit of the film etc etc. OK, early on this kinda happend with Se7en....

...and it ended, they have abandoned the DVD medium for a boring and formulaic features.

FF few years to the present, the current trend of DVDs is really ****ing annoying, i'm not sure if many of u feel the same way as i do, but i am so dissapointed in what the studios are doing. Almost every ****ing movie that comes out on DVD is the "uncensored" , "uncorked" , "un-****ing beliveably un-original". All these movies have nothing ****ing to offer, "uncesored" doesnt mean **** no more, it has lost its magic. Do u know what it means when u see "uncensored" on the dvd box? It means that the ****ing **** that wasnt good enough to be shown in the theater or cut for lenght has now been included. It has nothing to do with more story that adds to the overall film or violence, sex, etc. The "uncensored" has turned into nothing more then a marketing ploy to sell more copies of a particular film.

Discuss.....

What's your point????
Do we really need the Director's cut of LOTR? Wasn't it long enough the first time???

Nah... I coulda' sat on the couch for 14 more hours of mountain range and masta'...

Laughing... yeah I remember when there was all the hype about 2nd angles and all that other stuff. For me DVD has come to mean "check out the BTS" and no rewinding. Dat's about it.

the point is....that they are marketing them like tehy are somthing special..when in essence its nothing that exciting and the medium isnt being used to its full potential..unless were at the full potential level.

I'm not talking about adding 6hrs of features or 2hours more of the movie...i just think that the current trend of the whole "uncensored" trademark phrase is misleading all the ppl who are film buffs and are expecting the film to be actually "unrated" and not just for the sake of using the word and adding up some crappy footage

I'm not following what "uncensored" and "unrated" have to do with DVD though... it just means that this particular cut of the film does not have an MPAA rating. It seems to me that most movies that resort to this type of marketing are stupid comedies and teen movies anyhow. Usually if something was truly worth having in the movie it would have been in there the first time (special cases like LOTR extended cuts aside).

Unrated (to me) doesn't imply that a movie contains any sort of specific material. It just means that I won't find an MPAA rating on the box. Are you saying that when a DVD claims to be "uncensored" or "unrated" you are expecting more specific type of content ( be it blood/sex/violence) and the movie is not delivering? ...or maybe I'm missing your point here.

I think he's got two seperate points going... and mixing them is confusing the issue.

Basically it's funny that when DVD's came out they touted all the cool stuff that was to be coming FREE with movies now... like 2nd angles and stuff (that wouldn't be reasonable to actually do... but they did brag that was an option)... and anyway... as it turns out, since the DVD is a digital, interactive media... that all they really did is replace VHS tapes with something that doesn't need rewinding.

It would be fun to see more companies take advantage of all the capabilities hidden in this storage/interface.

But maybe I'm wrong and he is just bummed that all the "uncensored" DVDs aren't showing any more skin then the original.

If that were the case I wouldn't say "what's the point" so much as "who cares"... because if that's what you want then why waste time on a (most likely) crappy movie... just grab something of the top shelf in the back of the store and be done with it.

I'm cool what what they offer; for $14.99 to $30.00 I can own my favortie films in Widescreen Sorround Sound.

The only issue I have is the trend in releasing generic discs only to release the 3 disc spectacular 6 months later.

But I'm not cmplaining

Personally, I think this is mental masterbation. So the studios put out DVD's with crap special features, big deal. You are supporting that behavior by buying those DVDs.

Just because something is possible to do, second angles, commentaries, BTS, all that stuff doesn't mean that they are going to do it.

Did you know that it is possible to make a tire that never wears down? They aren't going to release them though, why? Because it kills the industry.

It is the first rule in a capitalistic society that if you give people the minimum they have less to ***** about. So thats what the studios give you. Discussing it, as if that is going to change anything, isn't going to accomplish a thing.

The truth of the matter is pure and simple, DVDs led to people having larger movie collections, slowed piracy down for a few years, but most importantly stimulated hundreds of billions of dollars for the movie studios because they were making $8 a unit on something that costs $.08 to produce.

If you want to discuss something relevent why not discuss how screwed in the head the guy who invented the self flushing toilet must have been?

Me, I hate "director's cuts" and "alternate endings".

I've yet to come across one that didn't suck. After all, there is usually a reason the release was released the way it was released.

Hey c'mon the auto-flush toilet was GENIUS!

Why don't we have B'days in the states? (sounds like Austrailian Ebonics 'cause I can't spell)

There is one genre of movies that have made more strides in the capabilities of DVD's, i.e. multi-camera angles, but unfortunately we are not allowed to discuss on this forum....

You don't really expect to see a second camera angle in your typical drama or action flick do you? About the only time they film with more than one camera is when it's a "one time only" kind of shot, car crashes, etc....

Personally, It doesn't really matter if they release 2, 3, 4, 5 different versions of a film.

There is a simple answer. Don't buy them, if you don't want them.

The studios make a killing off the collectors, the ones that don't care how many versions there are, they just want them all. And as long as people continue to buy, it isn't going to change. This is an old and tired topic. In the end, who really cares??!!

Maybe I didn't read enough enraged emotion in the guy's opening post... I thought he was just having fun with the idea of what DVDs were initially purported to do for the home viewer.

I bought The Thing "Collector's Edition"... and I watched all that stuff... and more then anything I realized, "hey this movie isn't nearly as good as I remembered"...
