DVD Printing

Thought I should revive an old thread....What do you guys think of the new Dymo Disc Painter?

http://global.dymo.com/enUS/DiscPainter/default.html?WT.srch=1&WT.mc_id=Google

Is it over-priced for a one trick pony?

I am looking into duplicating and printing on dvds for my clients.
My current client wants 12 dvds but my last client wanted 1000. I thought it could be smart to offer the duplication and printing sevices to them, so they will keep coming back when they need more.

I have also read good things about the Canon IP5 300 in previous posts. Also, has anyone gone for the Primera Pro or Bravo II? I am looking for any experiences/opinions you have for me.........
Thanks!

I've never used that one. But it seems to take as long as my epson to print, and you still have to print one at a time, so I'd have a hard time justifying the extra money.

The newest version of the epson that I use:

Hard to pass up at a hundred bucks, and they have rebates pretty regularly.

I also have an Epson 1400 that prints on DVDs, so I have a back up.

I do runs in the hundreds pretty regularly and rarely have problems. Maybe a smeared disc every 150 prints or so. But I only do about 30-40 at a clip, then give the machine a break. I keep the graphics demands low to save on ink and wear and tear. I've never had to do a full color, whole disk print in large lots. It's usually just a company logo and some text.

Looks decent for small runs, but two things:

1) You are still only offering burned DVDs.
2) If you are doing a run of 1000, honestly it's cheaper just to have a place like Discmakers do it. By the time you factor in ink, blank disks and time, they can do it better and cheaper for you for like 1000 disks. I priced this out recently and it just did not make sense to do a large run myself.

Does this epson actually print nicely? It's not faded or look home-made?

Photo quality. I've never had a complaint. My only gripe is that the software is proprietary and you can't color manage or adjust levels of quaity in it. I'd love to know if anyone has set up a template for this in photoshop.

I'm also trying to figure out how to select more thanone printer in the app. It always defaults to one or the other.

And at that price, it's not a network printer, which would be a nice feature.

My Epson prints photo quality on disks, so I guess it's ok. Not waterproof like you get at Blockbuster, but good enough. Now Epson also offers a water proof or water resistant ink for some of their printers. I haven't tried it yet, since my model wasn't on the list, but it's a year old so they probably forgot it.

You can overspray with a clear acrylic. It brightens the colors and provides protection. I support my disks on the little foam donuts, and spray directly down to avoid getting overspray around the edge.

Jim, Does that Epson work well with Mac? My Epson is a few years old and it does not print well with my mac for some reason.

Discmakers seemed a little pricey to me at 2.44 per DVD.

I just got a deal with glass pressed DVDs with full printed covers and cases for like 1.20 per DVD...reprints go down to about 1.10 ea. And again, I factor in my time to burn 1000...also, as I said, it includes cases and full color printed covers.

I have been using the Primera Bravo II for about 6 months or so. I've burned / printed about 3,000 DVD's with it and love it! I should compute how much each disc is costing me, but I really wanted the flexibility to print what I want on the discs. It will print batches of 25 or 50 (in Kiosk mode). I have been buying Taiyo Yuden 8x DVD-r's for about $.25 each. (These are inkjet printable, white with a small hub.) I'm not sure how many DVD's I get out of each ink cartridge, but that will get us much closer to the actual total unit cost.

I've been using the Primera Bravo SE for about a year now (after years of using Epson 200 series printers)... it's really a step up! I should say, the printing quality is not quite as beautiful as the Epsons (due to 3-color ink/no true black)... but the ability to print a buch of discs unattended really trumps the difference. The ability to queue up a bunch of different printing jobs and let it go overnight is a real blessing...

I've been using the new "Watershield" discs lately, and they look beautiful, and with those I see no quality deficit compared to the Epsons. They cost a bit more, but make a great imprression - glossy and smudgeproof!

Do you have any guestimate about ink costs per X number of DVDs?

It really depends on your disc designs... I always prefer dark, rich designs, but have learned to design more ink-consciously. Anyway, the Bravo SE with the standard cartridges gives me between 50 and 100 full-color discs per cartridge... but recently, a new firmware update allowed the use of "high capacity" cartridges... these cartridges, used in both the Bravo XP and Bravo SE series, actually can be found CHEAPER than the SE-only standard cartridges in some places. But I have no result yet on how many discs they'll yield.

So, with the satndard cartridge:
Printing really dark (mostly black or very dark color) disks - about 35-50 discs, or $.70 to $1.00 each

Printing nice full-color, full coverage discs with moderate mix of light and dark - about 50-100 discs, or about $0.30 to $0.50 each

I don't print much text-only... but I'd expect 200-400 per cartridge.

I don't have quite as good an estimate on the Epson cost, 'cause I was always using these printers for other uses as well (inserts, etc). But The Epson ink was always pricey!
