DVD issues on playback

I just finished a DVD for a client, and it is having issues. The editing was done in PP2, and exported from there as mp2 mpeg. I put it together with Uleads DVD workshop trial, and burned it to blank DVD media from CompUSA at 4x- it crashed at higher speeds. I played it in one player and it sticks, skips, etc. I put it in a second player and it works great. What is my issue du jour?

How fast is your disc? is it 1-16x. from my experince i had problems burning at fast speed. i usually burn it 1/4 of speed and that seems better. Sometime it is also a software, PC, make sure your pc is juiced and no software running in the backround.

That's a really good question, and I wish I had a good answer. The disk is a blank printable, and there is no info on the cakebox they come in. It's been a while since I bought them, and threw out the wrapper with those details. However, if I have to burn them at 4x instead of 8x or 16x, I can live with that. What I can't live with is the disk not playing well.

When I exported them from PP2, I used 1 pass cbr, at I think 7 mb. When I burned it in Ulead, it was at 8000 kbps vbr.

8000 may be a little high. I would uses around 6000. In Compressor i always make my settings have a bit rate of 5.5Mbps and a maximum bitrate of 7.2Mbps. It seems to work great. Also it is best to use VBR instead of CBR. There is no reason to have extra data on scenes that can be encoded on much less. In fact if you have the time I would recommend always using a 2-pass VBR

The only thing I would add to Steve's excellent post is an emphasis on total data rate. The total data rate is the video data rate plus the audio data rate. Based on the settings above the total rate might be as high as 8256. Too high.

Disclaimer - I don't know squat about PP2 or Ulead, but I've done a lot of compression with DVD Studio Pro, Avid DVD and Sorenson Squeeze.

Thanks guys, now I know where to start. I do try to use a 2 pass variable bit rate, when I have the option. The selection they had available for 4:3 NTSC was pretty bad though.

Thanks again Steve and Milksac

Try also not to encode the mpeg-file with PP or encore, i had different issues with that, get tmpeg, guess its free for 30 days and does agood job...sometimes Adobe does weird stuff when encoding, no joek man, last experience recently was encore changing (rather cutting) audio fade-ins and fade outs..never have seen(heard) something like that before, but everything was fine when encoded with tmpeg and implemented as mpeg into encore..no problems..!

I'll keep that in mind Germanboy. I am using pp2, but that's it. When it came time to author the DVD, premiere was working fine for simple insert & play, but the menu designer was pretty weak. I have a few different apps that came in some bundle or another, and they were pretty bad too. I downloaded a bunch of different trials, and was surprised to find Ulead was the easiest, most creative program.

Just let adobe products out of the way for most of the dvd work..just my experience...!

DVD lab is a very good and underrated tool, i guess you can download a trial, see if you like the handling...!

Like I've said elsewhere, if I had the $200 or whatever, I'd buy Ulead. Unless I found a good deal on a tripod head...

That looks cool, but I wasn't looking for a converter, but a DVD aythoring solution. And, I found it in Ulead of all places. Thanks anyways.
