DVD Importing

Tried a quick search but found nothing, so here goes.

Anyone know of a good way to import/rip from DVDs into FCP? We've got a archive library of footage backed up on DVD Video disks. So far the only way we can think of to import them is to play from a dvd and capture though our DVCAM VTRs. Of course this is all real time capture..

There must be someway to quickly import/capture/rip this stuff?????

Hmm, looks like i may have found my own answer on the apple discussions...

MPEG StreamClip. interesting little app that can export to just about any file format. trying it as i type this. Free to download and seems to have some pretty good reviews.

Although just a min ago I was trying a test on our Dual 2.5Ghz G5 Tower. While browsing in Safari, Listening to Itunes, and exporting a clip, i got the GREY SCREEN OF DEATH!!!. I cant say its the programs fault just yet, but this time around i turned off the preview window while exporting.... so far so good.

I don't think you searched this board hard enough. This was answered at least 3 times in the last 2 weeks. I think the best method is Mac The Ripper and MPEG Streamclip. Glad you found it though, it should work like a charm.

well i have to admit i used different keywords on apple then i did here. Im sure how you type it in the search makes a big difference.

MPEG STREMCLIP works but still kinda slow and very processor hungry. Im gonna try draggin the files from dvd to the hard drive, and see if it speeds it up any. I'm not expecting a big enough increase to warrant the 17 extra time it takes just to copy from disk, but nows a good time to find out for sure, not being under a time crunch for anything.

EDIT: Nope, no speed gain at all. Fix timecode was uber faster then before, but the actuall exporting still slow. I guess the only way to make it faster is to get a faster machine. as both processors were maxed out the whole time. (I lov menu meters)

I guess you have to rip the whole dvd? What if you just want 30 seconds or 3.5 minutes from a 2 hour dvd?

I use Cinematize 2 for a variety of reasons. You rip each track/chapter, then edit it. I assume other rippers work the same way. It has to do with the Long GOP structure of MPEG-2. PITA...
