OK:
Shot a 20 minute movie on DVX100 (original) for black and white in 4:3 mode 24p THIN rez
Turned B+W in FCP (along with color correction)
Looked all right on the canvas at 100% (although I know you can't trust it) on a decent HD computer monitor.
Looked good on on a 4:3 crtv external monitor.
-----
What I did (and this has gotten me good results in the past) was take the video and audio and export it directly into a new Compressor project with highest quality for a 90 minute project.
Then, took the two seperate files, imported them into DVD studio Pro and burned it.
Played back the DVD on the same computer, everything is much brighter than the original file and the footage is much granier.
I take it home, pop it into my DVD player and play it on an SD TV. Now it's way too dark, with almost no dynamic range.
I'm sure a good external monitor would help me in this situation, but am I exporting the DVD correctly? Does the dynamic range usually get squashed when you play back on an SD TV? I have no clue what I'm doing.
