DVD down

I have a dvd-rw that went south. It read two days ago but now has reduced itself to a coffee coaster. There are no signs of physical damage but the reader software claims the disk is not formatted. Anyone know of any good recovery software for awol dvd data storage disks? Some of the data on the disk is non replaceable and would be a real bad event if it were lost forever.

Any thoughts on why it would just fail. Drive is good, all other dvd-rw's read no problemo and software is fresh and working 110%

I can here it now....."That's what happens when you install too many fonts!" ;D

Re: DVD down

Try another DVD drive, I occasionaly burn CD's in one drive, then it wont read it, say insert disk, then I put it into another drive and all's well (I still reburn after copying back to the hard drive).
See if that works, you can also try buffing carefully with a soft cloth, just make sure to clean in circular motions, the same way they're read.

Re: DVD down.

I tried reading the disk on another machine with same results. I cleaned it pretty good too. I was under the impression that they were supposed to be cleaned from the inside out and never in a circular motion, so maybe I did more bad than good if my info was reversed

Re: DVD down

what brand was the dvd-rw? I want to make sure I don't buy them. Can datarecovery software recover data from a DVD/CD drive? You don't have any backups on the computer drive?

Re: DVD down

Well the brand was pioneer and ran for roughly three years. I'm gonna try and Norton disk doctor it. The reason I use DVD's is for backup so as not to have all that info on the hard drive. It is my own damned fault as I always meant to burn a backup of the backup just in case it failed. My procrastinating side was always telling me to do it later. I wouldn't boycott the pioneer brand over one lil old disk bumming out after three years of faithful service. I have no idea how long they are supposed to last but three years seems like a good haul to me.

Re: DVD down

Are you sure the disc was burned successfully to begin with? Is it the right disc? Not being facetious here, just trying to help get to the bottom of this.

Re: DVD down

Mino, I believe your cleaning technique is correct, Clean radialy, ie; from the centre out. Best of luck,

Re: DVD down

Always clean discs from the center out, in a straight line, never circularly around the hub. I've seen plenty of Discs that are cracked from the middle out (perpendicular to the direction the disc is read) and the disc will still work for the most part, but if you get a scratch length wise around the disc(parallel to the read), lookout!

Re: DVD down

yes frizzle it was burned three years ago and has worked well until two days ago. I downloaded a trial data recovery program and it will read the files on the disk ok, they are still intact so it must be a bad sector on disk at the beginning or something. It is the right disk It's blue and has backup 1 written all over it
