DVD Compatibility

We've been creating DVDs for years now, and have read many articles about dvds.

DVDs that we purchase are Ty - Format, and expensive, but we seem to get calls back about them getting "Disc Errors" when people play them.

The message boards suggest that 90% should play them, but seems like almost 1/2 don't.

Using Premiere Pro and Dell CPU that's high end, about 2 years old.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

I always try to stick to either tdk or verbatim media and have never had any problems. also make sure your using dvd-r, i have noticed a much higher succes rate with them than dvd+r. I haven't ever heard or Ty-format, that could be your problem, but i could be wrong. it shouldn't have anything to do with your computer. are you just using premiere to burn the discs? or exporting and then authoring in encore?

To avoid problems try burning at 2x instead of 4x or 16x.

Some older dvd players/readers have problems playing 16x dvds

I have sold almost 150 dvd-r and I think that about 5 of them had problems playing. Four of them I fixed by lowering the bitrate and burning at 2X, the last one would not play no matter what (cheap dvd/vcr combo player). I use TDK and they have seemed to be the most reliable. Always try to keep your bitrate at 7 or lower.

Having said all of that, I am not sure that this is the proper place for this discussion...there is a dvd section that this should probably get moved into.

After the issues I had last night and today, all I can recommend is not using a Sony Dw-D22A. I've been burning DVDs just fine, and needed more. All CompUSA had was 16x DVD-R Memorex printables. I burned 10 disks, 5 failed. Disk 11 pops up Unwriteable and that I needed to use DVD+R, as well as every other disk. Got some Maxells thinking the others were bad. These were also 16x DVD-R, and also Unwriteable. Picked up some 8x, and no problem. Of course, this was after several hours searching for a driver or firmware. Still unable to fix the issue, but I did find a work around.

Ditto to the TDK.

Ditto to the TDK.

I buy TDK 16x in bulk for 40 bucks for 100, and they have been great.

I buy mine at Costco...$ 46 + change for 100 white printables. Two or three times a year they have a coupon where you can get a good deal on them, (I think a second stack of 100 for half price, but they limit the number of stacks you can buy). That works out to $ 70 +/- for 200 white printable DVD-R. I specifically remember having only 1 failure, and it was visable when looking at the disc. It must have been a real fluke, as it was the only one in the stack that didn't work. Mine are burned using either a Plextor PX-712UF external combo FW/USB drive, (not sure what it's best speed is, but it's been as loyal and faithful as an old dog), or a Pioneer DVR-111D.
