DVD authoring software to replace Encore?

I mean, if you need something professional for your discs, have them pressed in a facility, no?

That's a very broad generalization that I would disagree with. You can increase the quality of your final product by using third-party encoders, some of which are even free, without incurring the not-so-small expense of a pressing. If a user doesn't need that extra quality, fine. I only point out that condeming Encore as a whole based on it's encoding quality is shortsighted. Encore is primarily an authoring tool, which also happens to offer a transcoding feature. If the transcoding isn't good enough, use a different transcoder. That alone doesn't affect Encore's authoring capabilities, which are quite excellent compared to other authoring tools in it's class, but somewhat limited when compared to the full capabilities of DVDs and BDs overall.

That's for sure. But then again, don't you get what you pay for?
I mean, to me Encore is , for what it worth, a pretty impressive piece of software.

The "you get what you pay for" argument does not hold up with ENCORE because there are a inexpensive encoders out there which do a better job than ENCORE. I would argue with ENCORE "you don't get what you pay for".

Again, ENCORE is an authoring tool that offers an encoder built-in, but it's primary, an AUTHORING tool. I'm pretty sure there's no people that bought it with the main idea of using it simply to encode mpeg2 or h264 with it.

I'm sure most people don't know much about encoders when they use ENCORE. Most people use ENCORE while assuming it does as good a job at encoding as any other software. Most people probably dont even know how to import third party encoded software. Most people probably spend hours and hours trying different ENCORE options in the vain hope of getting decent results. So any which way you look at it... for most people ENCORE is a piece of ****. :)

Any suggestions for encoding software which does a good job for someone who is Mac based?

As far as I know, Encore is the only application that will
allow a Mac based video editor to actually author Blu Ray
disks, and it does that pretty well in my opinion. If you
have any suggestions for better encoding tools I'm all
ears.

On the consumer level, and on a Mac, I think that compressor can actually create a nicer H264 (with a little setting tweaking) than Encore does. Compressor's H264 streams for BluRay are spec compliant so that they can be used in BluRay replication at a factory. The older versions of Encore didn't do that, but I think/hope that they've fixed that in CS6.
For DVD? I don't like any of the consumer encoders. They've all got issues.

The part where it relates to DVD and BuRay. It does a great job at encoding DVD and BluRay which is what this hread is about.

I for one am glad I have not had to make a DVD or BluRay for some time now as the majority of my work is for broadcast. What a time consuming waste of my time that was. I also haven't had to burn a CD in many years.

It is when you use Authoring Works 5 that you realize to what extend ENCORE is slow, mediocre, and just not on the level for encoding DVD and Blu Ray. In other words... ENCORE is a piece of (oooops there I go again). :)

I've used Encore for 6-8 years and it's the worst piece of software I've ever owned. The output is okay if you can get through the minefield of errors and glitches.

I like the video thumbnails, but would gladly leave it for something reliable. It sounds like both Encore and DVD Studio Pro are no longer supported, so something has to fill the vacuum. I'll check out the link above...

Hi folks,

I have used Encore for loads of dance show DVDs. I've found it fairly straightforward but did encounter various glitches in playback that took an age of tweaking settings to fix. Once I nailed it I've enjoyed using it. It did 'the job' so I've never had need for anything else. Now that Encore isn't in CC I'm keen to have a look at other software. The link by Amadou looks interesting - but surely there must be others out there? Keen to shop about!
