DVD authoring/copyright

I'd like to learn how to duplicate commercial DVD without loosing much quality. I've tried searching the forums for something particular but I haven't been able to find anything. I'm not looking to start pirating or anything but I'd like to know how someone is able to copy a commercial DVD. Does anyone have any useful information they could share about transfering the movie in a file and the compression needed. I've seen tools suggested for DVD authoring such as DVD Lab and they look interesting but I'm not sure it is what I need, or only to use with something like DV footage. Finally I am curious about the copyright protection on commercial DVDs, are their some DVDs that have special protection against duplication? Are there ways to get around that? Thanks for any help you can give me, I'm just looking find out some details about this information.

There is software out there (like DVD Shrink) that allows you to make backup copies of your own DVDs (it removes the CSS encryption etc.) You need a DVD burner to make the DVD after the fact.

DO NOT COPY DVDs that you do not own. It kills the industry that we all want to see alive and well. >:(

I know I am not going to pirate anything. I'd like to know the information because when I spend 40$ for a sweet ass criterion collection DVD or a foriegn film that real expensive, I am not going to ever let it get damaged to where it needs to be replaced.
