DVD Architect Workflow

If I want to create a dvd using 1,5hrs dv avi (pal) clip as a main movie, what is the propper (recommended) workflow in getting the best possible quality dvd?

I created the basic menu in DVDArchitect, inserted chapters and submenu. On preview everything works well. When I want to "optimize dvd" I have a mesage saying "disc space used 160%". I then select "fit to disc" option, and the program decreases the bit rate so the "disc space used" is at 95%.

After rendering and burning process using only DVDArchitect (total of about 4,5hrs) I try the disc in my JVC dvd player on pal tv and on my PC, picture and sound is good, menus are good, BUT last 2 chapters will not play!? Either by selecting the chapters or fforwarding thru the movie, the last 10minutes of dvd freeze. I thought it was a bad dvd, and tried everything again - the same thing happens on the same place.

Is it better to prepare (convert) dv avi clip for dvd using Vegas?
What are the most important setups that I have to consider in order to get the dvd up and running at the best possible quality?

Many thanks

It is not clear to me whether you have rendered the file to MPEG-2 before bringing into DVDA. Did you verify that the last two chapters "worked" ok in dvda before rendering? Although you can render in DVDA, everything I hear suggests that as much rendering as possible should be done in advance of DVDA. You may want to select the bitrate used in DVDA to fit to the dvd, and render beforehand. Still, I can't think of why this would cause the problem you are seeing, but it might be worth a try if all else fails.

Thanks for the advice!

I did not render the file to MPEG-2 before DVDA. The last two chapters worked fine in DVDA preview prior to rendering.

Can you set the bit rate when you render your file to MPEG-2 thru Vegas?
I remember seeing the options in Vegas that uses the "average bit rate". Something like: max bit rate 8,000 and average 4,000, but didn't see that I could change it.

From what I have experienced so far is that I have no problems with smaller clips for DVD burning. Ex. 1hour long DV AVI compresses and burnes to DVD thru DVDA with no problems at all. DVD runs smoothly and no freeze at all.

Cheers

I can't explain the freeze up in your current project, but you should be able to go into Vegas and change the avg, max, and min bit rate in the custom screen so that you fit on a single dvd. Still, that may not solve the dvda problem, but may be worth a try if you can't find the specific cause in dvda.
