DVD architect??? Compression?

I'm aware that dvd players do not recognize .avi files but instead use mpeg's. Yet i notice a very large deterioration in quality when turning an .avi file into a dvd acceptable file using dvd architect. For example i have a very short clip that in .avi format is 53mb large. When i put it into dvd architect and go to burn it says it will be compressed to 14mb. I have attempted to set the bitrates as high as possible but still only get it to be a 17mb file. I burned this copy anyways and can notice a a significant drop in quality from the .avi version on my computer. Is this just common to dvd authoring? Do i have settings wrong somewhere? Up till now i had been authoring clips only for the web, creating dvds is new to me.

If you have DVDA I asume you have Vegas too.
My workflow is to render avi to mpeg2 in Vegas
and author the mpeg2 files in DVDA.
If you render in DVDA you cannot save the mpeg2 file
for later use as you can when rendering in Vegas.

yes i have vegas. so can i use vegas to render higher quality mpeg2's than what dvda compresses the avi to? Therefore making an mpeg2 rendered in vegas look better than an avi rendered in vegas and converted in dvda?

In Vegas go to FILE - RENDER AS and choose MainConcept MPEG-2.

In the template section use DVD ARCHITECT NTSC VIDEO STREAM or whatever of the DVDA template you need.

Then the video will be optimized for DVDA and you'll get much better quality.

Be careful not to encode higher than 7,500,000 bitrate. Many/most consumer dvdplayers will choke. I render at 6,500,000 CBR.

If you have scenes with motion in them (anything other than talking head scenes) I recommend always checking the 2 pass button (1st pass analizes your show, 2nd pass encodes). I set my avg. bitrate around 7,000 and MAX at 8,000.

ALways render your footage in Vegas BEFORE going to DVDA and make certain you use one of the DVD Architect presets (then customize your video settings)

If your file is only 54meg you should be able to burn it to dvd easycdcreator or any such program. I believe that most dvd players will play quicktime or avi in a raw format. I'm a mac guy and I'm not positive about avi but have been successful with qt. On the pc side of things I've used pro coder with very good results but If I remember its pricy. If it needs to mpeg2 remember to seperate your audio and I sure vagas probbly handles that as well.

Good luck
