After searching all day on the web, I'm at a loss for my situation, so maybe someone here can help out. It's quite detailed and has many caveats, so I'll just outline them below after I describe my end goal, hopefully someone can interept them and give me a working workflow. I'm running FCP 6.0.1, Color 1.0.1, QT 7.2, Mac OS 10.4.11, MacBook Pro 2.3, 3GB's ram with no desire to update any of my software, if possible...
We've cut a commercial at SD, and now we're adding HD footage to replace the SD footage. There are 4 clips of 3D animation that will stay SD. When I drop in the DVCPROHD 720p footage it gets letterboxed which is fine. I did the edit, and now I want to color correct the HD footage in it's original frame size, 720p.
Send to Color doesn't really work and will keep the footage letterboxed and at SD. I was going to export an XML, but it references frame sizes so I decided to export and EDL from FCP, then import into a Color project. At first, I exported a drop frame edl from an SD timeline which worked, i.e., it reconnected with the HD material fine, but when the rendered files were reimported into FCP they were short. I figured out my problem, exported a drop frame timeline, converted it via cinema tools to a 24fps EDL then imported into Color as 23.98. Now, when I reimport the rendered files they are one frame off.
Does anyone know how to edit 23.98 HD footage in a 29.97 timeline and color correct the original HD footage then reimport into FCP and drop it back in the same timeline to replace the original clips?
I know this is convulted, so if anyone needs clarification, let me know...I'm pulling my hair out on a way to make this workflow work. At this point I'm assuming it's because the conversion from a 29.97 to a 24fps EDL is the culprit, but I don't know a workaround....yet.
