DVCPRO Progressive

Cranky

Since there is no "Technical" section on the site, I am asking here. I've come across "DVCPRO Progressive" format, which is supposed to be 480/576-line 50/60 frame/s (sic!) with 4:2:0 color space at 50 Mbit/s.

Could someone explain to me is this indeed a format supported by Panasonic, or an error. Because 480p60 is HD in JVC's terms (it is part of 720p HDV spec). I can understand that one can shoot progressive at 24/25/30 fps using standard DV/DVCPRO, but this one is supposed to be native progressive and at full 50/60 frames per second.

Found OM for AJ-PD900, indeed has a DVCPRO P label. Frame rate is mentioned nowhere, as well as color sampling rate. Hmm. Have Panasonic discontinued this format after it released DVCPRO HD?

It was a short-lived 480/60p format that predated DVCPRO-HD, IIRC. I think there was only ever one camera or deck. No 24p, no 30p, it was only 60p (or, I guess, 50p PAL).

480/60p isn't considered HD, it's considered ED (EDTV). Yes it's part of the HDV spec, but the ATSC classifies it as EDTV; a notch above SDTV but not HDTV.

In Australia 576p is considered HD ;-) Also, old articles about this product often call it a high definition product. For that time it was indeed high -- or at least higher -- definition. I still remember 480p plasma panels. Anyway, just caught my eye.
