DVCPro HD raw files...

I have a question that I can't figure out. I edited a project in DVCPro HD. I now want to give the client the full-res video files on DVDs. I'm wondering if I do that, will they even be able to look at them if they don't have the DVCPro HD codec on their computer? If they won't be able to look at them what could I do to give them the full-res video files in something they would be able to look at? This kinda sounds like a newb question, but I just can't wrap my head around it. Thanks for any ideas.

You have a few options if they don't have the codec:

1) Give them uncompressed 10bit 4:2:2 files. These will be enormous though, so you'll probably need an external drive to transport them. They can also take a while to load into a media player because of the file size. This will be your only "full-res" option.

2) Create an h.264 file at the native resolution. You will have the same number of lines this way, but some compressing using keyframes. This may very well be tolerable to you though, especially if you set the bit rate very high. I would recommend experimenting with this is as much as possible if you haven't already.

3) HD-DVD or Blu-Ray. Probably not an option for you (it isn't for most people yet), but depending on what your client has for playback devices and the length of your project ... You can burn up to 18 minutes of HD-DVD content on a DVD-5.

That's all I know, and I have investigated this quite a bit, as I have a feature made in DVCPro HD that I have never even seen at full-res outside of FCP.

1) That sounds like a decent option.

2) I did think of this...I might give that to them as a backup or an alternative.

3) Yeah not an option as of right now. But it will be a certain option in the future.

Thanks for your help.

Are the clients on PCs or Macs? Do they want to work w/the footage or just view it? If they want to work w/the footage do you know what app(s) they'll be using?

I would say they have both. Basically it is just in case they want to use it for web or something like that. Not sure which apps but maybe flash or AE or something like that. I think I will just send them a DVCPro HD file, 10 bit file, and a h.264. They should be able to do something with any 3 of those.
