DVCPRO-HD over HDV

mmm

Veteran
Has anyone used both HDV and DVCPRO-HD in FCP 5? I was wondering how they perform against each other. DVCPRO-HD obviously has a higher bitrate, but does the GOP, processor intensive MPEG2 of HDV make it slower and harder to work with?

I am just thinking about upgrading from FCP 4 and it would be nice to heard from people who have taken that step.

Please could you state your system setup as well...

Many thanks

Yes HDV is much slower because it must be dumultiplexed and remultiplexed on the fly. A fast G5 can run a couple of streams before it bogs down, compared to many more in DVCPROHD. But there is the cost factor.

Thanks Noah,
With DVCPRO-HD, is hard disk speed the limiting factor? Do you need raid or is a SATA enough?

Depends how much realtime streams you need. DVCPROHD runs at a maximum of about 14 megabytes/second. That's well within ATA and SATA but if you have six streams you'll start to want something faster- such as a SATA raid for cost savings.

thanks agian,

But if I want to save a few quid, I can just use SATA?

In my current G4 I have 4 HDs, but I hear that the G5 will only hold 2. That is a bit of a pain! In a G4 you can set up a nice raid all in the one box!
