DVCAM to FCP via NYC to UK (with no DVCAM Deck) - What the best option?

Hi Folks,

Wondering if anyone can help me with this one. A friend has 3 hours of DVCAM footage recorded on a PD150 that I am hoping to edit. The problem being that he is in NYC and I am in UK - oh and I don't have access to a DVCAM ot deck.

What is gonna be the best way for him to get me the footage? It has been suggested that he compresses it to DVD and drops it in the mail to me - but to be honest that sounds like a real pain - ripping from DVD and losing that quality through the MPEG2 compression.

Any ideas?

If he digitizes the material in smaller clips instead of the entire tape he could burn the Quicktimes to a data DVD. At 13g/hour x 3 tapes = 39gig, about 9 DVDs should cover it.

I must say that this isn't a very efficient way to get it done, it would take a lot of time to burn all those discs. Given the hours tying up the edit suite in making all these discs it would be a heck of a lot cheaper if he mailed you the tapes and you rented a deck for a day.

This is a terrible idea. The end product will look like garbage.

You could have him buy a small external hard drive, digitize the footage to the drive, then send you the drive. I can't think of better cost effective solutions that don't destroy quality.

If you're thinking 39 GB, you can get a small drive for a reasonable cost and have him FedEx it for less than a rental I'd bet. And you'd be ready to work once you receive the package.
