DVC30 vs DVX100

Now I realize that I should probably slip into a flame retardant suit before posing this question. However, I am trying to decide between a DVX100 and a DVC30. At this point in the process I am looking to acertain which of these cams has the higher image quality. I have read that the DVC30 has the same RGB / Gamma Processing as the DVX100a. This reportedly enables the DVC30 through it's 12bit DSP to cram four times more information per sample than the previous 10bit chip on the DVX100. Even with 1/4 inch CCDs isn't the DVC30s resulting image better than the DVX100? Thanks for the help!

Re: DVC30 vs DVX100

not by a long shot, and don't worry, my flame thrower ran out of gas the other day.

The DVX100a uses 12bit DSP as well as th DVC30, but even if it didn't, it would still have the upper hand, for two reasons. Reason one, CCD size. Really size matters, not just for depth of field but this also allows the individual pixels to be larger, and therefore more sensitive to light. This might not give better low light, but it does improve color accuracy. Second reason. The DVX uses a progressive scan CCD wich in turn gives about 30% higher resolution than any interlaced CCD. Therefore when shooting in progressive scan, which the DVC30 does not have, you will have a much higher resolution, much more color accurate picture.

Hope this helps.

So what about DVC30 versus DVC80?? and what if you don't use the progressive scan mode on the DVX100??

Re: DVC30 vs DVX100

Thanks to Scharky for the response. I should clarify what I'm interested in. I have a local vendor who has on hand a DVC30 and a DVX100 not the DVX100a. The older version. He and I believe that the DVC30 competes quite strongly with the 1/4 inch ccd DVX100. We believe this performance is due to the newer 12bit technology the DVC30 has borrowed from it's older brother the DVX100a. Now, I'm buying the DVC30 for 900 bucks less than what I could get the demo DVX100. I was just looking for comments about this purchase and rationale. One other comment, does size really matter? What about that new JVC HD cam with one small ccd? Could how the image is processed,(as in this case) have a great deal to do with the resulting image? As to the DVC80- well, it's a good cam. But, again more expensive, hard to find because it's discontinued, and I believe it has the older 10bit electronics. So, gonna stick with the DVC30. Thanks, MB
