DVC30 Discontinued!

David@Leo's Camera

Leos Camera Canada
Panasonic Canada has announced the end of this great camera. This one was always a favourite of mine for it's high image quality and compact size. The infrared mode opens up lots of creative possibilites and it makes a fine companion camera to the DVX when shooting 60i.
Anyway, we will only be able to place one more order where we can hope to get stock, so if anyone is interested please let me know right away.
The DVC60 shoulder mount camera will still be in production for now.
Cheers!

Oooooooooh, most interesting... and presumably no replacement announced yet?

Perchance we should buckle our seatbelts for some announcements...

I agree with Barry Green about this being an indication that Panasonic may announce something soon.

Looks like Panasonic got sick and tired about hearing all the publicity surrounding JVC, Canon, and Sony’s new camcorders.

They did say they wanted to have a press event instead of bringing their stuff to IBC.

Does this mean I can sell my 30 for more than street price?

Not unless someone wants it badly! I almost bought a JVC HD10U "B"-stock from JVC last week, it looked rather tempting as I could potentially get some terrific footage regardless of the bad press about it, but there was only a 1-year warranty and it was refurbished and it was from JVC, not a used eBay-cam. Needless to say, I passed. So, I wouldn't expect too much more than what it was worth before being discontinued if you're trying to sell a used camera with little or no warranty.

Now, getting back on topic, I'm hoping Panasonic announces something new myself, definitely a new 24p camera or some massive price drop on the DVX. Heck, I'd take an AVCHD or AVC-Intra DVX camera if they do announce one, certainly a TON of potential if they continue to go with the tapeless format strategy they're doing with the HVX200, whether via SD cards or P2 cards even.

I'm with you on that one. Money would be falling out of my pocket for a AVC HD 24p on SD cards.

snap, crackle and pop...

Well that's definitely going to happen, I mean, that's basically what the press releases promise, right? The format supports 24p in both 1080 and 720, and Panasonic already announced they'll be making cameras that record AVC-HD to SD cards, and Panasonic knows that 24p is what we all want. We just don't have any indication of what type of cameras they'll produce in the AVC-HD format. Will they make a DVX-class AVC-HD product? Or will they follow Sony's lead and introduce little consumer cams and limit their AVC-HD product line to that type of thing? I can't see why they would; I mean, why include 24P in the standard if you're not going to take advantage of it?

Then again, I guess it's all down to: does Panasonic Broadcast consider AVC-HD a viable format for them? Panasonic Consumer is all amped on AVC-HD, but the stuff we like (DVX, HVX, SDX, SPX, VariCam, HDX, etc) all comes from Panasonic Broadcast. So maybe they will, or maybe not...

I would not be upset to see a consumer model for family fun etc.
Sometimes taking the HVX to the beach just seems a bit extreme.

I prefer all my stuff even personal to be 24 :)

I quite agree. Although, I must admit to using the HVX on entirely too many family outings. :D

I just hope that Panasonic doesn't take as much to release their new HD baby as they did with the HVX. They waited SO LONG after every other brand put their HD cameras out.

If they have a massive price drop on the DVX or release 'the new dvx' at the dvx price range, i swear i will cry. I've already bought my dvx, so here's hoping to nothing drastic happening for at least a year

It was a risky bet from you to buy a dvx in the middle a revolutionary format movement with so many brands releasing new stuff looking for the top spot, Malcom.

A month ago, my Panasonic supplier told me that the Panasonic discontinued the DVC60 too. Has anyone heard anything about that camera?

I am hoping a new camera that has the form factor of the DVX not the HVX (size and feel). I will take dropping the Mini-DV tape transport. Maybe some increased low light ability, native 16x9, and the time lapse back - wham, I'm into it! (of course the same price point around the DVX).

Am I dreaming?

Considering there's no new product that's been announced or even hinted at, then yeah, probably. :)

But, I would expect native 16x9 no matter what, as AVC-HD is a native 16x9 format. And yes the tape could likely be dropped, although truthfully SD cards really don't take up much space, they're something like 1/20th the volume of a P2 card so two or three SD slots wouldn't take up much room at all. As for increases in low light vs. a DVX? Not a prayer. Every one of the HD cameras is at least 1 stop slower than their standard-def cousins, and usually up to 2 stops slower, and the new FX7 is reportedly 1 stop slower than the FX1 (which is already 2 stops slower than the PD170). So no, there is really no hope of a new HD camera being more light-sensitive than the standard-def camera it's inspired from.
