DVC Pro50 in Premier ?

Hi.

Does anyone know if there is any plugin solution to enable editing of DVC Pro50 in Adobe Premier Pro?

I've heard it should be possible using a codec plugin, but wasn't able to find anything.

I also heard that DVC-Pro HD is not available for premier, but I'll be happy to hear differently.

So if anyone knows about a DVC Pro-50 solution for Premier Pro, please post a link to it!

Thanks,

Yuval.

Yes, you can use DVFilm's Raylight program, in conjunction with the free Matrox DVCPRO50 codec, and edit DV50 in Premiere Pro today.

Hi Barry,

Thanks for your reply.
I downloaded the demo but couldn't get it to work with Premier.
I might be doing something wrong, but nothing new appears in the codec list when I try to create a new project or export an existing one.

Also, reading about Raylight it seems to be a tool developed specifically for the HVX200. I have a bunch of DVC-Pro 50 tapes that I need to edit. will it enable me to capture DVC-Pro 50 via Firewire, or use fies captured through a different system, or is it really for MFX only?

Thanks,

Yuval.

I'm interested in this topic as well. I fully expected Adobe to support the MXF format along with DVCPRO-50 and DVCPRO-HD codecs with their 2.0 release, but they appear to have missed the boat. Most of my projects are still SD finishes, and DVCPRO-50 seems to be an improvement over DV without the high demands of HD that are not needed for most of the work I do.

If I read the Raylight pages correctly, the program transcodes to a custom Raylight HD codec. I'm really looking for something that allows capture of DVCPRO-50 from firewire sources such as Panasonic's nifty little AJ-SD93 VTR.

There is no provision for capturing tapes, no. You'd need a DV50-aware NLE like Avid or FCP or Edius for that.

Raylight converts HVX MXF files (or SPX800 or SPC700 MXF files) into .AVI files. You have to install the Matrox DVCPRO50 codec in order to be able to use the files.

If you've got DVCPRO50 tapes, you could rent time on an Avid to capture them, then burn the files to a hard disk and bring the files back to Premiere and install the Avid codec pack; that should probably work.

So, if I bring it into raylight on a P2 card I can covert it to an intermediate avi file that premiere recognizes, correct?

I wish Cineform Aspect HD did this, since I already have that.

From what I have heard, is that Adobe didnt pick up support for the DVCpro50 and DVCProHD because of paying for it. I have also heard that maybe somewhere Adobe is developing their own DV50 and DV100 codecs so we will be able to edit. For now I just use AspectHD and it works fine.

Correct. And it can do so for DV, DVCPRO, DVCPRO50, and DVCPRO-HD, including duplicate-frame-removal in 720p and advanced pulldown removal for 1080/24pA.

DVCPRO50 is supported through using the free download Matrox codec.

Just to update anyone who may have had teh same question I had about DVCPRO50.

With the help of Tim at Cineform, I have found and tested that DVCPRO50 MXF files CAN be converted to Cineform Intermediate files using Aspect HD and used in an Abobe Premiere timeline.

My next question that I have to figure out now is if I lose the benefits of shooting in DVCPRO50 mode (4:2:2) if I export it as a standard DV file. I am assuming so. We'll see.

The CineForm visually-lossless AVI format is also 4:2:2. With it, you can also utilize the accelerated Real-Time performance of Aspect HD and edit it right along-side your DVCProHD-originated material (which has also been converted to CineForm AVI), maintaining the highest quality throughout the workflow. We also have plans to make the scaler compatible so that you can have both your DVCPro50 and DVCProHD material at 1280x720.

really !

really !

You mean when I use CineForm to convewrt my spx800 dvcpro50 720x480 Cineform will convert it to 1280x720 ? Shouldnt't that be done on the edit timeline ? Or during render to DVD ? Or should the dv50 video be rendered as 720x480 and the DVD players will play it at widescreen with no black bars ?

DV rack HD

DV rack HD

I am capturing directly to my laptop and editing the resulting AVI files with Premiere. I use Serious Magic DV rack HD. It worl flawlessly. I just capture to disk and bring the files in. Also I could just bring the files from the P2 just by converting the, with the DV rack converter.

isn't that what you need??

DV rack

DV rack

There is software that gets installed with DV Rack, the VDpro GD Batch Converter, which also you may buy alone a lot cheaper, and does the job. Just grab the files from the P2 and drah and drop them into the window. It is a snap.

Dvpro convertor

Dvpro convertor

I looked to see if they have a trail version of that and they don't.
I tried Raylight and it miss reads the dvcpro50 16:9 shot orces it to convert at 4:3

Thanks,

Patrick

the DVCPRO50 files actually are 4:3. it either works the same as the DVX100's squeeze, or letterbox mode if your shooting 16:9. but only the DVCPRO HD formats are actually naitive 16:9. you can interpret the footage in the NLE/compositor your using on the dvcpro50 files and use a 1.33 pixel aspect or whatever your NLE uses to conform to a 16:9 aspect if you've used squeeze mode and would like it to be them to be unsqueezed for 16:9 playback in your NLE.

spx800 4:3 + 16:9 ?

spx800 4:3 + 16:9 ?

That's what I find so confusing as the Panasonic tech data says that the spx800 dvcpro50 shoots native 16:9

I have tried Aspect Hd and like it over Raylight as the former allows me to adjust the aspect ratio to 16:9 (what I am shooting at) before the actual conversion takes place from P2 MXF to AVI.

With Raylight, I couldn't adjust the aspect ratio PAR to 1.21 until I imported the video onto the Vegas timeline. Aslo, with raylight, I notice a brief 4:3 image upon rendering the 16:9 timeline.

Many thanks,

Patrick

dvcpro50 Q

dvcpro50 Q

I just tried Aspect HD with dvcpro50 video and I don't see it pulling down any 2:3 frames. Yes, I have the matrox dvcpro50 codec. The pulldowns lin Aspect Hd ook to me to support only HD video.
