DV vs. AVI

When acquiring dv video, the image and audio is recorded in dv format. When captured to a pc, it is immediately stored as an avi file on the hard drive (at least that's my understanding). What is the difference, in data density (MB/s) and otherwise betweem dv and avi? Is there any compression applied when converted from dv to avi during capture? If you were to capture, edit, then print back to tape for playing in the camera, what file format would you render to?
Is there something wrong with me because it is Saturday night and I am thinking of such things?

Re: DV vs. AVI

The data is transferred from the tape onto the hard disk unmodified, but has an .AVI "wrapper" put around it so that editing programs know what to do with it. The contents are a direct digital copy of what was on the tape, no additional compression or any other type of modification.

You can render to either .AVI or QuickTime depending on your NLE's preferences. Most PC-based editors would use .AVI files.
