DV TO iPOD

I've been wanting a hard drive recorder for my DVX since I got it, and I've been wanting to finally drop the cash and buy and an mp3 player as well. Now I can do both in one fell swoop! :P But honestly, I'm interested to see how this will compare to, say, the firestore. It'd be a slightly cheaper alternative if it works well. Time will tell I suppose...

By the by, anyone have experience with the Firestore?

I know nothing of this product, but as a fulltime professional photographer who shoots digital, I looked into the commercial solutions for transfering memory cards to an iPod and there was NOTHING with a decent transfer rate. It was all so horribly slow that it made it an unusable solution for backing up/clearing cards in the field. I find it hard to imagine there is a device that can record the digital video to an iPod at a fast enough rate.

Maybe, just hard to believe. And if it CAN, I will be first in line to get one.

As others have mentioned in other threads, the hard drive can handle recording video to an iPod, but there are cheaper/better solutions. Using a dedicated drive in an external enclosure would be far more reliable (and cheaper) than using an iPod. While I do have a video iPod, I'd prefer to purchase an additional hard drive. That way I'd have additional capacity and better reliability. I am very excited about this product as well, but not to use in conjunction with my iPod.

of course, but if your client has an Ipod, they can take the footage home on the spot. plus you can record to tapes, just ot be safe.

you can record to an ipod, no problem, the Hardrive is fast enough.

Not to be argumentative, but there is more involved than just the HD specs, otherwise it wouldn't be so pitiful for memory card transfer. And again, I hope it works well so I can get one.

if they are specifially marketing this device to record to ipods, i think its pretty clear its fast enough other wise they would lose all their money with a useless product.

I agree with GageFX about the iPod...
The Catapult it's gonna be able to work with other
HD's.... not just for the iPod...
Cesar.

"By offering a standard USB 2.0 connection, the Catapult has been designed to take advantage of many popular storage devices. With this in mind, the Catapult has a convenient piggy-back neoprene pouch designed to hold an iPod or even a 2 ½" USB drive. For those with greater storage needs, virtually any USB 2.0 drive system can be connected, including multiple terabyte systems."

Wouldn't be the first time a company has done this.

Let's just hope it works.

My firewire doesn't work on my DVX....it went bad within the first couple weeks of opening the box. So I just use another camcorder to capture to FCP with. I'm thinking that using an external hd to capture onto wouldn't work for me.....am I thinking correctly?

I think you're right. You'd need a working firewire port to hook the device up to.
