DV start/stop autodetect splits clips in all the wrong places

I'm somewhat new to Final Cut and I thought I had all my ducks in a row with capturing DVX100A 24pA anamorphic footage. Everything looks good, I read the threads here to be sure. But executing DV start/stop autodetect, and then breaking the markers out into multiclips (a process in need of serious streamlining IMO) didn't work AT ALL. FCP broke up the clips in all the wrong places, in the middle of shots, sometimes not at all, etc etc.

Is this a known issue? Like I said, I thought I had everything set up right but this is confounding. Any help is appreciated! Never had this problem in any other NLE. Thanks,

Not sure how "known" it is... but it happened to me too. I've ignored it for the last few versions because of that. A year or so ago I did send a letter to the FCP feedback asking for this to be fixed... but as of yet it hasn't.

I think the pulldown affects the timing markers that FCP uses to tell where shots stop and start. I believe FCP looks for the time stamp encoded in the information (not to be confused with timecode). If that stamp occurs along with a drop-frame, it may get confused. This isn't confirmed, just a theory. Doesn't help solve the problem, either, I know. I'd really like to be able to find a solution as well. Makes batch capturing much easier.

I have a suggestion. Try capturing the footage in 29.97 framerate and do the DV start/stop detect. Then go to tools > remove advanced pulldown. That will hopefully preserve the timing info of the markers.

Thanks Macworm, that's exactly what I'm thinking it is--I'll try to re-cap. Still, seems like a pretty egregious problem considering we've been through 234897905 final cut updates...

If it's just a marker here and there, you can delete those and manually place markers in the correct spot or ignore DV Start/Stop and place all manually. A drag, but it would get you what you need.

Yeah, but... seems like a very, very basic problem to have with the much-hyped Final Cut Pro. All I want to do is batch-capture a 24pA tape. Is that so hard?
