DV Rig Jr. is Better!

Well I ordered the DV rig Jr for a job that I needed to be a bit more under the radar. I have used the Pro rig a few times and was very happy with it. We all know how hard it is to handhold the DVX, especially all day long. Way too many numb hands.
After using the Jr today I am thinking I like it better than the pro. Although the pro is very steady, it is a bit bulky, and a bit awkward at times. And the one thing that truely bothered me was the lack of control I hade with my hands off the actual camera. Now if you are using other cameras this is not as much of a problem, but since the DVX has no lanc, there is no other way to control say the iris with out you hand on the camera. Now the JR rig solves this, you hold the camera in a similar way you would without the device, but only to guide it, not holding the weight. But your hands are still free to do its thing. This, plus the fact you are lugging less weight make it a winner. That and you save some money buying this. The shots are still steady, but there is way more control. I am very happy with this thing. I was thinking of buying the pro rig as well, now I am not too sure.

Sweet. I've been thinking about getting one since you told me that you'd ordered one. I'm definitely gonna have to look into it.

I just got the dvRigjr. and put it to the test with a full day off shooting an outdoor festival and then an indoor cultural event that same evening ... whew! I can tell you that without dvRigJr. I'd still be rubbing in the bengay.

I'm not sore at all and was using the rig to it's full potential. Overall, I'm very happy. It will definitely keep the doctor/chiropractor away !

I've had the DVCaddie for several months and prefer the dvRigJr. The biggest selling point and advantage to me is the ability to raise the platform using the spring loaded arm with little effort from my arms. I'm a short dude (5'4"), so with this contraption I can shoot eye level with people who are 6' and taller ... no more looking up people's nostrils. Now I wish there was a similar device for the full "betacam" sized cameras that I use at my dayjob -- then I'd be able to shoot basketball without looking at nosehairs ;)

With the dvRigJr. I can let an arm stage loose and do a pedestal "up" to a higher level while tilting the head to maintain composition and when I'm at the desired height, I can lock off the arm stage. If I want to go even I higher, there's a second stage on the riser arm (it's like a spring loaded light stand arm). The spring loaded arms work like a dream and with practice you can use this feature along with a glide step to achieve a steadicam like movement. I also used the dvRigjr. detached with just the arm on the ground, for a short monopod. Also the "head" on the DVrigJR is much better and fluid than the DVCaddie's hinges.

take care,
Jay
