I've got DV Rack with the HDV Power Pack. As far as what you can "get away with" -- it really requires a powerful system to have a hope of displaying the full-res image at full frame rate. But, they've made several "throttle controls" that let you control the display and get realtime recording performance. If you choose to show only one field, for example, you get a lot better overall system performance.
As far as file space, HDV takes up the same (or less) space than DV does.
I think system requirements for the HDV version are much more important to follow. The HDV monitor HDV Rack is far more important, to an HDV shooter, than the DV monitor is to a DV shooter. Reason is: HDV cameras don't show you what you're actually getting on tape; they show you uncompressed output to the LCD/VF and out the monitor ports. So if HDV compression is blurring your footage, you'll never know until you get back to the editing suite! But HDV Rack shows you *exactly* what the HDV compression is doing to your footage. So it's important to have a hyper-powerful system so that it can display full monitor resolution and full frame rate, so you know that 'what you see is what you get'.
(but for just recording, and not worrying about proper monitoring, you don't need that fast of a system).
Now, if you were talking about a DVCPRO-HD version of HD Rack, that's not available yet, and I don't expect it to be available for several months. It's not even announced as forthcoming; they've only said that they're very interested in doing such a product, but it's too early to say that they'll be successful in creating it. I believe wholeheartedly that they will be, but that's just my opinion, not an official Serious Magic position statement.
