Dv Import Issue

Importing some footage shot with the HVX-200 in 24p SQUEEZ DV mode to FCP 5.1.4.
The setting I am importing gives me some crappy looking footage, BLURRY, jagged lines where straigt ones should be, etc... NOT WHAT I SHOT! I play it back on my TV and it looks fine, none of that, CRYSTAL CLEAR!

What should my CAPTURE SETTINGS BE?
What should my SEQUENCE SETTING BE?

Thank you!

Haven't used the tape recorder in the HVX, but I would think for digitizing, just use the standard Anamorphic DV NTSC 48kHz option. Select the same for the sequence setting. Unless by 24p it actually is 24pA, then in that case, you'll want to use the DV NTSC Pulldown preset (you might have to duplicate it and make an Anamorphic one, I can't recall if that's already there or not). Then for the sequence you'll want the DV 23.98 one and again might have to turn on the Anamorphic flag (if such a preset doesn't already exist). Good luck.

cheers.

If I shot inthe 24p SQUEEZE mode, would I still have to do ANAMORPHIC?
Also, I just shot 24p on DV, so I didnt think the 2:3:3:2 Pulldown was needed?
I did a small test and put it on a DVD, and it seems as though it looks fine on the TV, just CRAPPY on the computer.
IM SUCH AN ASS I should have recorded HD GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!

never use a computer screen as a reference, never! output your timeline to a monitor or a tv.

If you shot in just plain 24p then no, you do not need the pulldown. That's only when you shoot in Advanced.

If you shot in squeeze mode then yes, you need the Anamorphic turned on. SD is 4x3. So when you "squeeze" you're cramming the 16x9 into the 4x3, "squeezing it". So when you take this to an NLE and just digitize it as SD it's going to continue to look squeezed because you're simply saying "hey there FCP, I have a SD 4x3 image." When you turn on the Anamorphic flag you tell FCP that you have a 16x9 image, so can you unsqueeze it for me.

And as mentioned, never trust your computer monitor. Always do your quality control using an external monitor of some level.

As for shooting HD, well HD workflows have their own share of potential trouble spots. So had you shot HD, you might have had other "fun quirks" to contend with. This is just the way post goes (even for the experienced folks out there). Good luck.

cheers.
