DV footage stutters in Vegas Movie Studio HD

Hi!
I`m editing DV proxy files with Vegas Movie Studio HD, because my laptop isn`t fast enough for HD.
Processor: AMD Athlon II Neo K125 1.70 GHz.
RAM: 2,00 GB - 1,75 GB availiable.

The system requirements of Movie Studio is 1 GHz processor and 1 GB RAM (if you`re not editing HD).

But when I play back the DV footage, there is some stuttering. Especially right after I have opened up my projects and starts editing. It gets smoother after a while.

I find this strange, because I remember having a 300 MHz machine with 512 RAM
10 years ago, and the playback for the DV files was smooth. I could edit big project without any trouble.

Why can`t Movie Studio play it smooth when my requirements is what it is.
Why is it inferior compared to my 10 year old editing software.

My Video Preview is set on Auto.

Turn off any background functions -- virus protection, etc. Anything else that's running other than Vegas. That's still a relatively slow processor and small amount of RAM.

Other considerations are the speed of your hard drive (5400 or 7200rpm?) and the amount of free space on that drive. Fragmentation may also be an issue.

Performance will also improve if your video files are not on the same physical drive as your NLE. Try moving them to a 7200rpm external (USB) hard drive.
