DV footage in HD sequence

Does any one have a recommendation for the best way to work with mini-DV 4:3 clips (shot on DVX100, 24P) in a DVCPRO HD 16:9 720/24PN sequence. 95% of the program was shot in HD on the HVX200, but I need to sneak in a few mini-DV clips and try to have them look somewhat decent - it's for broadcast.

Any tips on conversion of the footage, filters, etc... would be appreciated.

Hmmm... I do know that you can't have both clips in one timeline in FCP. Maybe you could uprez (photozoom or similar program) the 4.3, letterbox it, and then bring it in?

Someone will chime in shortly with a better answer, I'm sure... but there's an idea.

When you say sneak them in and make them look decent are you trying to make the mini-DV look as though it was basically shot with the HVX? Or is the mini-DV going to obviously be a "special" camera (obvious to the audience)?

If its a "special"/POV/etc type camera I'd just try using FCP's built in zoom abilities and see how it holds up for you (make sure to examine on a broadcast monitor, not a computer screen). There's quite a bit of forgiveness from an audience's end if its clearly that kind of 'camera.' If that doesn't hold up try AE or Shake.

If you're looking to do a tight match to the HVX then I'd go out to another application to blow it up before bringing back into FCP. Again, I'd start with Shake and/or AE. I've heard a lot of people talk about the aforementioned photozoom, but not sure if that will work on video (or perhaps you'd have to export the video as a sequence of stills first).

cheers.

You can have both HD and SD footage in one timeline but you'll need to scale and render the footage to match the timeline settings (scale up and render the SD footage for HD sequence...scale down and render the HD for SD sequence.) As pointed out by VaricamLife...FCP scaling of SD footage up to HD size may not be the best way to go for quality reasons.

You can just drop them in the same Sequence, but you'll have to resize them and such to match the screen size. And depending on your hardware, you may or may not have RT playback without having to render.

I use the Supersizer in Studio Artist to up-rez stuff, works better than any other solution I've found. It's just very time consuming for it to render out.
