is it really worth spenidng $600 and up on a dv deck?
is it worth even getting one? (thinks to saving camera heads)

not to me. I just use a cheapo minidv camera. It's a panasonic gs-9.I think I paid $300 for it.Works good enough for me. All I need it for is to dump my clips into my nle, and save the wear and tear on my dvx.

yea. my neighbor uses a minidv also to dump his clips onto his mac. but my school class room uses panasonic dv decks. so I was wondering if it was worth it. cause they have a left over one I might be able to snag for free if not I can buy it for a little sum of money hopefully.

I guess that depends on much you're going to use it. If you aren't going to be doing extremely heavy capturing, you should be fine using a cheap cam. That's what I do.

If you can get a free deck then there's no question. Get it! I use a seperate deck and I think it's well worth what I spent. It's useful not only for capture, but for mastering back to DV. It's saving my camera heads too.

I've found the DSR-11 to be more useful than initially thought. Aside from being pretty solid in quality and a more robust mechanism than cheaper camcorders (which I feel safer with knowing it won't eat my tape), I'm also able to play/record to mini and Full-size DVCam tapes. Also I can take this little deck with me on long shoots (live events) where changing tape isn't an option and chain it to the DVX100 via firewire and set the DSR11 to automatically continue recording when the end of the DVX100's tape is about to reach its end OR Record either simultaneously to 2 tapes creating an exact copy (good for giving to a client right away).

I do see the advantages of having a camcorder as a deck though, hell, you get a camera! I just don't trust the mechanisms on them as they are more prone to eating tapes, and if that happens - you are screwed. Nothing sounds scarrier than after a tape rewinds or forwards it "jerks" to a stop. :undecided The dsr-11 actually slows to a stop and start.
