DV Converter?

Hey Everyone,
simple question here.
Does anyone know of a low-cost solution to convert BNC to DV in an IEEE1394 interface. Long story short, Im purchasing an older Panasonic camera (D610, specifically)that outputs BNC, and the previous owner recommended getting a converter so I could edit on my Imac in FCP. He didn't really give me any info on them or where to get 'em, though.

thanks ahead of time!

I'd look for a used Sony DVMC-DA2 on eBay. Canopus (now Grass Valley) makes an AD converter, too. I believe it's the ADVC110. Those are really the lowest cost solutions.

Ok, both of them make sense, though they only do RCA and S-video, so would I just get a BNC to s-video? or bnc to RCA? or look for a converter that does bnc?

BNC is the name of a type of connector that is used for many other things besides video. You seem to be asking about "composite video" (Standard Definition composite video to be exact.)

You need a SD composite video digitizer. The ones in the Synthetic Aperture list convert analog video to DV which is one type of video file. If DV is what you need (your selected editing software can use DV), then any of the gadgets on the Synthetic Aperture list will do the job for you.

The type of connector (RCA vs. BNC) is a trivial technicality. As edinc90 said, you can buy a BNC to RCA adapter for $1-2 most anywhere.

Ok! This makes a lot of sense now. Thanks for the help guys.
One other question though...
what would my best option for converting the audio over be? (of course, the cam outputs xlr)

My personal preference is the Canopus ADVC-110. It handles both video AND audio and has a reputation of being rock-solid.

You will need to get cables (and/or adapters) to connect your source (camcorder) to the converter box. Most consumer-level converter boxes for computers use RCA connectors for both video and audio. It should be trivial to find cables and/or adapters to get from BNC to RCA for video, and from XLR to RCA for audio. Professional-level converters use BNC and XLR connectors, but they probably cost more than your camcorder and not worth the extra $$$ for your stated application.
