DV Aspect Ratio!?! Who is right?

Hey guys, I'm at work right now and I realized that the aspect ratio on FCP here is set to 4:3 640x480. I've been capturing at home at 3:2 720x480.
This guy at my work says that I should be capturing at 4:3 720x540 and my friend says I should be capturing at 4:3 720x640.
And due to an extensive search on the site, skippyfetus says I should be capturing at 4:3 720x480.

I'm going nuts! Who is right? How should I capture and what will I eat for dinner tonight? Please help. Except for the dinner thing. Tai sounds good, uhm... Tai.

DV is 720x480

Your capturing software gives you a choice? Hmmm...

Now...the output...that's a whole nother thing...that makes my head hurt.

Ok, but the only option that I can choose to get 720x480 in FCP comes with the ratio 3x2. Isnt it supposed to be 4:3?

Any takers?

I'll have to look in the DVX hand book when I get home tonight. The answers in their right? Barry?

Just capture it with the FCP presets and you're set.
720 x 540 is for square pixels (if you're working in a graphics program that can't deal with .9 pixels)

as said before, DV is 720x480...

this is 4:3... but since the pixels are not square you get resolution that is 3:2 when displayed on a display using square pixels..

Final Cut captures at 720x480.... you can alter the footage afterwards by changing the pixel aspect ratio in the clips properties. So it is just a display thing.

The error here is that you're thinking it should be square pixels. DV pixels are not square.

720x480 is the pixel grid. In square pixels, that'd amount to a 3:2 aspect ratio, but the pixels are not square, they're tall and skinny.

4:3 is right, and 720x480 is right.
