Dutch Angles

Personally and just my opinion of course, I believe there are better and more interesting ways slant a perspective on something. To me its almost like, lets give this character a particular slant/perspective when he/she is seen. So what shall we do? Hmm lets go Dutch because I have nothing better. But again all just my opinion. And certainly thats not true of every case where its been used.

Yeah, I'm just wondering why so much hatred amongst the indie crowd when successful entities are still employing them without issue.

The fourth shot in Slumdog Millionaire and nearly every other shot is dutched. I'm wondering who's willing to walk up to the Boyle and Mantle and say "that dutch angle is horrible".

I wonder if anyones gonna throw popcorn at the screen during the new Star Trek. Daniel Mindel is DP if I remember right. He's got a [bad] habit of dutching during action sequences or moments of fretful discovery.

Of course both of these occasions can be served by the dutch angle, just sayin'.

I get the inappropriately. Though. It's just as bad as a dolly shot or crane shot being used inappropriately. Or, hell, handheld, rapid-fire edits, blown out highlights, speed ramps, even focus racks.

I like how they're used in a lot of films actually. Sure they can be used poorly like every other technique in film, but even used poorly they're not as distracting as bad shaky cam (cough Quantum of Solace) or overused cgi (cough Star Wars Prequels).

Why all the hatred for them?

Because they are so simple and over looked. All the indies hated them in Slumdog "Hate Dutch Angels" ya ya ya... Use them right and they are sweet!

People try so hard to be different, sometimes being different works but very rarely. Back to the basics and focusing on content.

I hated those shots. It was very distracting. Arguably though how are you going to point at a shot and say that it's used appropriately or not? You can lists reasons for why it shouldn't be done but ultimately there's no rule as some people take it one way and some another way. Look at 24; it eats the 180 degree rules for breakfast every episode and it doesn't bother me at all.

No hatred here. Pretty silly to hate a single tool in the filmmaking arsenal.

That's like hating slo-mo or steadicam.

Glad I'm not the only one that thinks ductched shots can be successfully employed. Heard way too many "peers" gettin' all antsy about Dutched Angles.

I agree, Zak, that Geoff uses Ducthed Angles/Canted Angles to great effect. And I still can't figure anything bad about them in any of Boyles movies. Bits of sunshine were still canted, despite a different Cinematographer being on board.

Oh well, I'm sated, though! Lol. Thanks for the minor discussion.
