Dust issues with Century Optics .6

Hi all,
i recently purchased the Century optics .6x wideangle lens. it's a great lens, i really like it  , but i've been experiencing dust problems since the very first days of use :( .

In particular i was shooting a documentary, with many shots 'on the field', in a substancially urban area.
I realized from maybe the third day of use of the lens, that some dust already got in between the lens elements (not on the external surfaces, but inside  ).
I used it for about a week intensely every day, and at the moment there are several particles of dust inside.

- Is this normal? should i expect the amount of dust to increase? nobody experienced this?
- I dealt with several lenses in the past, but i've never had such problems so fast! I'm aware that some dust can eventually get in the lens structure, but not after 3 days!
- Is there some way to prevent this to happen? obviously it got it from the side separation between the rotating parts. should i seal it in some way?

I dont think they would affect the image so far, but because of the big depth of field, i'm afraid that in some situations (eg sun hitting the lens and especially if it will increase) may show up on video.

During the working week, I've been storing the lens in the same bag of the camera (a soft camera case, with a separate 'section' for the lens, with padded separator of the bag plus some foamrubber i put around it to further prevent shock damage. i would simply put the lens there with the front /rear caps on.
I used maximum care with dust with both the camera and the lens, kept the camera case always closed and cleaned it in a couple of cases i realized it was getting inevitably a little dusty.
My only doubt is that the little foam rubber i used as padding could have a little dust with it (even though i cleaned as much as i could before using it. But still, it doesnt justify the dust in my opinion.
I wonder if this lens is particularly vulnerable to dust intrusion?

thanks all!

Andrea,

If you are having a problem with your Century Optics adapter, you can send it to us (with your name and phone number) for service, as it has a one year warranty. Or you can call John in service, 800-228-1254, to explain the problem. I do not think this is a common problem.

Andrea,

The Century .6X wide angle adapter is one single element. If that is what you have then unless there is something in the glass itself (unlikely but not impossible) the dust has to be on either the front or rear surface. The nature of the element is such that dust on the back may appear to be inside (the element is quite thin in the middle).

The tremendous depth of field that is a function of the extremely short effective focal length of the lens combination makes dust, dirt, scratches more of a problem than with the lens alone. One thing to do is use the camera's ND filters to open the iris and reduce the depth of field. It will still be very large but not come quite so close to the element, making it harder to image small bits of dust/dirt.

As Ken said, if you feel there is a problem with the unit do not hesitate to contact us and return it for inspection and repair/replacement under warranty if necessary.

Wow! I'm really impressed :)
I post a thread here and possibly two of the most qualified people in the world answer me right away! thanks!

The fact that it is a single element (i had no idea) makes what i said sound a little ridicoulous i guess :) Unless, as you mentioned, it's a glass problem. I will check with max care at home and will let you know. Maybe as u say it is a sort of optical illusion which makes stuff on the other surface look like it is inside. I just got the impression that i could never get rid of the particles.

But thanks a lot again for your answers and availability! fantastic!
And that lens is a winner for its price. really impressive.
:)Andrea
