Duplicating audio channels - Veg 5

My left channel has nice levels -- my right channel (second channel, different mic) is very low.

Can I duplicate the left channel and replace the right channel with it? (I tried the right-click>Channel>Left only, but that sounds worse than using both channels).

Thanks for your help.

Me, I would kill the right channel completely, and pan the left so it's centered.

Actually, that's what I normally do. ;D

If the left channel audio is good and you want to discard the right channnel audio, you did the right proceedure. Not sure why that's not sounding good.

It sounds flat to me by comparison. Am I essentially making it mono?

Since you are sending the same audio out both channels, yes, that counts as mono. (short for monaural = one sound)

So is there a way to manipulate the individual channels discreetly? I know I've done that in Avid.

Re: Duplicating audio channels - Veg 5

It’ll be mono, but depending on what you’re doing, you can find ways to dress it up.

For example – if you have a mono music track which you want to use as background music, and you’re doing a 5.1 mix, you can assign one channel to the left front and the other to the right front – and move them both completely into those speakers – and then have your dialogue coming from your center speaker. The sounds will be separated and the music won’t sound as much like it’s coming from the same place the dialogue is. There will be a distinction between something obviously mono (the single center speaker) and something coming out of two speakers in a more full soundscape, and it will fool the ear a bit.

Just an example. I don’t know what your plans are.

Sure, do it at night when there's no one around :-)

But seriously folks...
Just duplicate the track and make one Left channel only, the other, Right channel only.

Thanks, Gary. That makes sense. Had trouble getting the Avid thinking out of my mind.
