Dumb question - what's a screener look like?

i've been asked by a coupla critic websites and a sales agent to send them a screener of my film. i've never actually seen a screener even though i know what it is. should i just export out a copy of my film with "screener" across the bottom and the opacity turned down?

also should i be sending these screeners to film festivals for the submissions in order to get in? (obviously not if its selected)

A screener is just a fancy way of saying a standard consumer format copy of your film. Like a DVD, VHS or Blu-Ray. But to cover you rear it is, in this day and age, a good idea to slap something like a tag in the film. What i would suggest is put the tag in the corner with the person/company's name you're sending that particular screener to. Then randomly in the movie put the tag right in the middle of the screen for 10 seconds or something. For every screener you send out put the middle of the screen tag at a different point in the movie and keep a log of where in the movie you put the tag and who it went to that way if it shows up on the net, even if they cover the tag in the corner for the whole film and then the middle of the screen tag for those 10 seconds, you know exactly where it came from and who to sue.

if you feel the need to. Personally I would because you never know whose hands your film might land in. but then again, i'm just paranoid.
