Dumb question about F.O.V.

Alright, so I've done some searching through the FAQs and I didn't find what I was looking for, so let me just ask this directly.

When using a 35mm lens with a 35mm adapter, you you get a similar field of view as if you were shooting 35mm film, or is it similar to the effect of putting a 35mm film lens on a 35mm digital camera, where you get the automagic maginication?

Essentially, I guess what I want to understand is if I purchase a 28mm film lens, will I get a 28mm equivalent image, or am I going to be looking at an equivalent 35-40mm F.O.V.?

Thanks and I am sorry if this has been asked ad nauseum.

In theory, there is no crop factor because the GG size is usually larger than 35mm film or even SLR size. But in practice there's a variable crop factor depending on whether your GG is off-center or the lens vignettes, requiring you to zoom in more to clear them. This can't really be predicted as it varies depends on the lens, the camera and the adapter.

Thanks for the answer. The fact that it is not automatically giving me a magnification factor is helpful.

I guess I'll have to bit the bullet for Christmas and see if I can get an adapter. I wish I hadn't sold all my Nikon glass now!

Huy Vu is correct - It depends on the adapter, the model of the camera you are putting it on, and the specific offset of your chip set as there seems to be slop in how centrally they are fixed on the video camera.. That said there are some general observations. The Brevis tends to give you full SLR image size on most cameras. I think the letus did also and maybe the RR. The SG Pro is apparently designed to give you a smaller FOV more akin to cine 35 lenses. I believe the P+S mini is only designed for Cine but I'm not sure now that they have a Nikon adapter.

The EX-1 is a difficult lens for the adapter makers and the Letus Extreme will not give full SLR though it tends to be larger than cine. The SG requires even more zoom in on mine. However it varies camera to camera. I just worked with an EX-1 Letus combination that had substantially more FOV than mine . I was PO'd.

Wow. Camera to camera differences? That seems a bit odd. I'm a bit uncomfortable thinking about buying a Letus or Brevis at $1500+ and not really knowing what kind of results I may get.
