dumb FCP question here

How do I blend two scenes together? I want to have the end of the first clip to fade out and the beginning of the next scene fade in at the same time.

Thanks! :)

sometimes i put one clip on track 1 and the other on track 2, have them overlap by a few frames to a second and manually lower the opacity where they overlap.

Thanks brother! I usually do the same thing but wondered if that was "the hard way" of doing it as I pretty much "figured out" how to use FCP on my own and I'm sure most of what I do is the harder way. lol

Fades are one way to do it- only drawback is that they can require the entire clip to be rendered out rather than just the overlapping area. Two clips on one track with a cross-dissolve transition linking them is the more traditional method.

Coffee I think the help file in FCP has tons of info in, you might find some there, I've turned to it once or twice.

It is soooooooo easy, Takes 0.5 second.

Firstly make sure you are using at least a 3 button mouse. Throw the 1 button junk in the bin or on eBay.

Then right click on the shoot transition point and Add cross dissolve. Double click on it to alter it, or simply use the adaptable cursor to drag the transition as required.

lol, thanks guys! I'll be sure to buy a three button mouse today and give it a shot when I get home tonight. Funny, I go from PC to Mac, teach myself all sorts of new strange mac things and get stuck on something like this every now and then.

One thing that bugs me about Apple is the stupid 1 button mouse obsession! Please, get over it, it isn't better or simpler!

I agree with that totally! Can I buy a regular mouse or does it have to be one from apple?
I think any USB mouse will work fine. I have a Microsoft optical 5 button scroll wheel..etc. Just check the packaging to make sure that the software is OSX compatable

Any USB mouse works - I'm using an Intellimouse Explorer by M$.
But I recently ordered THIS and you might consider it to go with your Apple keyboard, Coffee. After all, the looks do matter for us, G5 people :cheesy:

Use the cross fade like Noah suggests. You can always use the roll tool to slide the transition around.

IF -- IF - IF!!! You are bent on putting tracks on top of eachother and using the opacity line to do the transition razor blade the clip so you don't have to render the whole thing again...

Ahhhh, that's pretty cool! Too expensive imo though.

capt, mmm, ecking & noah, thanks for your input! that's why this site is my #1 favorite, everyone is willing to give some useful advice.

hey capt, "roll tool to slide the transition around"???? Don't know what that is but you bet your ass that tonight I'll be on FCP trying to figure out what you mean. thanks bud.

I find single clicking or double clicking to be a lot less confusing. How can a single click be more confusing than a left or right button? You double click for some things and single click for others. The irony is no one would even have mice if Apple didn't bring the idea over from the Xerox in house system. It seems the left right buttons on the PC were made so no one would get sued.

I my book, the more buttons, the better. I use all 5 on my mouse and the roll wheel all the time.

1 button is especially bad in particular situations. For example in photoshop when cloning.

I suppose we should credit Apple for the mouse, but MS and IBM did improve on some things when they stole the GUI. I used to find Apple OSs before OSX vastly inferior to operate to windows. I used OS9 to edit on, but windows on a PC for other everyday stuff. The standard 1 button Apple mouse also has very poor ergonomics.
