Dude made a lens from scratch

Damn that pretty impressive even the image projected by the lens looks awful.
wonder will he keep redoing it until he gets a usable lens? XD

I love those kinds of projects. In fact, I'm going to show that video to my high school multimedia class today. Good inspiration for using our new "maker lab."

The main takeaway, though, is that there's a pretty good reason why we pay good money to the likes of Canon or Zeiss to do all that work for us!

(The terrible image at the end was from the backside of his homemade ground glass, and probably didn't reflect all that the lens alone might be capable of. I'd like to see an image actually recorded on film in the camera for comparison.)

I always admire the tenacity of girls and guys that reinvent the wheel for the fun of it. Hat off to him for embarking and completing the task. The question "why" remains however. I guess he has much free time on his hands. Must be nice....

The "why" is because he has a YT channel - no other reason. With a million subscribers, he probably makes a decent living from it too.

Agreed that 90% of the image's issues are from the horrible ground glass. I'd love to see that lens projected on a good GG, I bet it's surprisingly decent.

I guess it's a generational, cultural gap. I would never waste a second on watching this stuff..... wait- i did posting here haha ;-)

A great video and sobering considering the effort required. This video made me think if our species suffered a mair catastrophic event we are screwed. The vast majority of us have no idea how to make the simplest things or even how to grow food.

I’ve often had the same thought. Ironically, we are so “advanced” now, that if something bad did happen, we would could never return to where we are now. Or where we were even hundreds of years ago. We would literally be back in the stone-age. I just look at the chaos and break-down in daily life and society that’s caused from natural events that happen on a regular basis, like flooding and hurricanes and tornadoes. We can’t even get the basic necessities of life like water without technology, anymore... The more advanced a society becomes, the more fragile it becomes. Where we are now has all been built on steps over thousands of years and when those steps are destroyed, they can never be built again.
