Dubbing?

I have made quite a few short films, but they didn't go anywhere (festivals, etc.) and was wondering how you all record audio. I basically had one camera (a DVX100) and used a boom pole and a relatively okay mike attached to camera via XLR cables. Now, the sound came out O.K. but not so well in outside scenes. How do you guys accomplish the proper sound in an outside shoot. A friend of mine was actually telling me that he does the same thing I do and then he brings his actors in one by one to a studio and they dub the entire film over again. I understand the benefit of that, but I mean can't that take away a lot from the film such as someone speaking while they're opening the door. You would probably have to add in a pretty precise door opening sound for a sound like that. So I was just wondering and wanted to ask you guys how you all record your audio and do you dub your films? Thanks, Bash!

If your looking to sound anything like a commercially released film you have to do a WHOLE lot more to your tracks than your doing. While most films don't have a lot of ADR they do have a lot of FX (Sound effects that is). So none of the doors you hear in a theatre were from production, well maybe 1%. 99% of all sound that is not dialog is added to the film. What your trying to record during shooting is dialog and as little else as poss.

My advice is get a sound person for production and a post sound person to work on the tracks after you edit. And avoid ADR like the plague.

Are you using wind protection outside? Is your boom getting in as close as possible? Non-pro boom guys will often hang the boom in the general direction of the action and well out of frame. You need it in there super close and consistent.

Cheers

Yeah, I'm using wind protection and everything and the boom is seriously as close as it can get... oh well, i believe i'll just continue to do what i can, but for my next film, I think I'm going to get myself a semi-pro sound guy and a semi-pro camera man... i really have a good script and with the right things, it will look perfect... but thanks a lot guys... really appreciate you giving my question your time!

well i used a rode wind screen (fuzz) and i used a rode ntg 1... i said relatively okay because i didn't get the type of quality i wanted... I analyzed the audio again today and it seems ok, but i really want to cut out some of the background noise like the cars going by are pretty loud in there... i caught the actor's voices and everything, but at some points their voices would quiet down... maybe in a while, i'll upload some audio and show you all...
