Rendering 33 sec uncompressed avi to wmv 3mbit preset took me 47 secs on our dual dual-core opteron 2ghz. Worth noting is that during this render the CPUs maxed at only 36% CPU usage. So keep in mind that CPU power isn't all that counts, at least not when dealing with uncomppressed footage which results in large data files. To demonstrate this I also put the uncompressed source avi on a regular SATA disk (instead of on the raid), and yes that really slowed things down, the render now took 1 min and 12 sec!

^ but logically, a sata HD would transfer about 100-150MB/s.
an avi uncomp. is about 4mb/s?
a raid is what? about 500-800mb/s?
for a 4mb/s operation, would that make a difference logically?
btw love my old p4 xpc; has 2 sata 160G, 512ram, can handle everything nicely, for the low ram I think all you need is put your temporary file onto a drive that is not your OS drive, and set it to max like 4G, think that'll handle anything.
