Dual Processor Support

I just found this thread and wanted to answer a few unanswered questions and share some relevant info that is of the interest of all of you building a computer.

I also have the ASUS P5N32-E SLI motherboard. It uses NVIDIA 680i chips for the memory controller and the hard drive controller. These chips perform other tasks as well but they manage the two important ones wonderfully. I have 2 1GB sicks of RAM overclocked at 950MHz and 4-4-4-12-1T trimmings which all in all add bandwidth and responsiveness. It is hard to say how good of a job the memory controller is doing other than by pointing out that the benchmarks affected by increased bandwidth were significantly affected by the increases. However, the South Bridge is also a stellar performer and there is no doubt about it. I have three pairs of perpendicular recording HDDs set up in three different RAID0 configurations and I am getting 133.3 132.4 and 131.8MB/s average reads for each.
Also I got my E6300 to a rock solid stable overclock of 3.15GHz with seldom peaks of 51C through 15hs of testing at 26C ambient temperature by using 1.3 Vcore (actual). I am using a Tuniq Tower 120mm CPU cooler which will also fit in any of the LGA 775 CPUs. This socket includes Quadros with 1333FSBs. The NorthBridge and SouthBridge get very hot when overclocking though, so if you want to be able to edit you will also have to fit special $30 coolers on these, or add little 40mm fans to the existing heatsinks and re-set them with Artic Silver thermal compound as mentioned before (better and easier to do the first). The Motherboard obviously supports up to 8GB of DDR2 for later releases and comes with lots of bells and whistles. There is only two Firewire ports, one in the I/O and one on-board, but there are two PCIE x16 ports one PCI-E x8 one PCI-E x1 and two PCI ports (M-Audio 2496 uses normal PCI)...

All we have to wish for now is that hopefully Sony will step it ALL up on their end by 8.0, or at least the multiple core support for previews! AGHHH! How incredibly frustrating!
And stupid.

You SHOULD be able to use Secondary Windows Display as your preview out, and if you have a card with an S-Video out, you should be able to assign SWD to it, so that it will send ONLY the preview and not the whole Vegas window. Or, if you must assign desktop space to the TV as a monitor, you can simply not put any Vegas windows on it.

Unfortunately, at the moment, I can't test the viability of that, because I have two monitors hooked up to the card, and unhooking one and rooting around with the display settings in order to test it will take longer than I have today.

But if you're using only one monitor, or have more than one card, it's a possiblity. I have not tested it and don't know how it compares to preiviewing out through firewire, but in theory, it should work.

with all these new cpus, how fast can it render a 1 minute avi into wmv?

my old p4 rendered a 37sec wmv into avi in 35seconds.... just curious have much imporvement the new cpus are.

And which processor, Duo, Quadro, speed 1.86, 2.?, 3.?.
I guess memory bandwidth has a much lesser effect but that too.
Then lastly, though unlikely, your HDDs could be a bottleneck if your setup is fast enough.

Depends on the settings on the WMV -- quality, frame size, etc..

1 minute avi into wmv(settings: 1M video all other settings default)
it took my 2.4G overclocked to 3.2G P4, 3minutes 10 sec to render a 33.3 sec raw AVI clip into the above setting WMV.

how long does it take the current core duals/core 2 duals? whatever dual you have. (my ram is 512M, 2 160G sata2 HD)

thinking if it's worth the upgrade or not.... thx if anybody can post some bench marks.

I would say that at 3.4GHz your RAM is definitely a bottleneck. The senor Vegas users said to me RAM isn't as much of a factor but that there is a certain requirement... I found that out myself too... G.Skill HZs use amazing ram modules and you'll be able to over clock it to 4-4-4-5-1T 950MHz with only 2.29V. They will stay cold enough without it but I got a little $20 fan on them. Most people run 2.3V to them 24/7. You will also be able to get them to 4-4-4-12-2T 1100MHz on the same voltage, but I got better Super Pi benchmarks with the first set. 2 x 1G sticks are $180.

I'll run that when I can and post. But my E6300 Duo is only pushing 3.1497GHz and Vegas being so CPU intensive will not make for a parallel comparison... However if I match your time that will be a great indication of the effect of RAM. Is that SD you are talking about?

BTW, you could also get a small/inexpensive HDD and RAID0 the two 160GB drives... then render to the smaller one... You Could Ghost your C: over to the new drive, then manually copy anything important that's in the other drive, then RAID them. Seagate 320GB perpendiculars are $95.

are the new core duals slower than my OC p4? is this why everybody's reluctant to reply?

My AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual (2.61 GHz per processor- 2 GB Ram) rendered an uncompressed 33 second .avi to .wmv 3 Mbs- all others default) in 1 minute 30 seconds.

OC to 3.4ghz 33 sec avi into wmv 3M other default 3min. 5sec.
3.2ghz is 3:45sec
3.3ghz is 3:16sec

please post some intel dual core results..... ^^

Hey I wonder what one of the next AMDs will take... they are supposed to be 50% faster than the Intel Quads

AMD 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+ 2.61 Ghz 2 GB ram, rendered the file in 1 minute 13 sec.

I know it's not an Intel but compared to the P4 times...my AMD screams.

BTW I'm running ver. 7e
