Dual Monitor Question

NO CA$H

Could I have the timeline on one monitor and the other stuff on the second monitor like you can do with FCP? Or do I have to stretch the whole program across both screens?

That's true. The timeline stays with the main window -- but you can put the main window anywhere you want, too, making it as big or as small as you want.

Do you guys think its worth getting two LCD's? I already ordered a Sony Pvm preview monitor. Do you use two LCD's and a preview monitor?

I couldn't think of using Vegas on a single monitor system after using it with dual monitors. My prefered workspace setup is with the timeline fullscreen on one monitor and the preview window, mixer and a dock with the explorer, trimer, project media, ect. on the other monitor.

Because Vegas allows you almost unlimited docking options, you can just about dock anything with anything and float it where ever you like. As far as I know the only thing you cannot float and dock is the timeline. Why you would want to in Vegas is beyond me.

Here is a screenshot of my workspace.

Usually I keep the timeline and all its other tabs in one monitor..and then jus click and drag the preview window to the other monitor..because i tried a full screen preview...and it reallly pooed up my monitor..made me get a new video card..cuz it somehow fried the card..which is really weird.

but if you have 3 montiors...its heaven...timeline in one...preview the other...other apps like after effects in the other....i like doing that one the most.

I was reading a tutorial today (rather than working) that said something about running the video feed out through firewire and connecting your DV cam up to a TV for a second monitor. I was going to try this tonight just to see how it works. Has anyone tried this?

I only ask because I was a moron and bought a Dell that has everything propietary and cannot add a dual monitor card, so I'm SOL.

Thanks Swirv and BlckHawk.

I just got my B&H package today...I got Vegas 6 + DVD, a G-Raid 250BG HD, A Logic vegas keyboard, a Sony PVM 9L1 monitor, and a DSR 11 deck. So I'm all set except for the new computer with dual 19 inch monitors. I got a feeling Circuit City is gunna be packed...

That is a standard practice, because it's crucial to do it that way.

You need to be previewing on the device which will be your ultimate display, especially if you're going to be color-correcting. A computer monitor and a TV screen are far from the same thing, and what you see on your computer monitor isn't going to be what you see on a TV. A computer monitor can display millions more colors than a TV, and it has much higher resolution. So, if something looks good on a computer monitor, it does not follow that it will look good on a TV.

Thanks David... BTW: Those Vasst tutorials you are always telling people to read are really really helpful... Wish I had listened to you a while ago.

Yeah, I've gone back and forth, can't get this external monitor thing to work...

If anyone has any experience using a GS9 as a deck and getting an external preview, please let me know...

I tried this method with adobe premiere and it works fine for me. I just change the setting in premiere to Output to dv hardware and it plays right up.

OK, I'm a moron... It would help if I hit the 'preview on external monitor button'

Works great, thanks for the help!

It has a PCI-Express slot instead of AGP? You'll be able to find a dual-head card for that.

I tried to buy one and it wouldn't fit...

Dell sucks, I wouldn't buy another one, but this machine is still ticking...
