dual monitor help

You say you "tried everything man". I specifically asked if you "right clicked the black monitor and then left clicked the option which should read "attached" or something similar."....to further expand on this, in the Display properties:

When both monitors are physically powered AND hooked up(VGA, DVI, etc.) this screen(display properties) should look something like above, although one may be black, or darker, or greyed out(by black darker or greyed out I don't mean the ACTUAL monitor, I mean the representation of it in the "Display Properties"). Right click the greyed out monitor, and a menu should come up. If it has an option which says, or is similar to "attached", then select it...otherwise write down the options and let me know what they are.

You say "when I boot it It just says monitor going to sleep.." Are you turning off the computer every time you hook up a new monitor or switch out a cable? With monitors you don't need to turn off the system, and this can save you tons of headaches and time.....although, often when wanting dual monitor support you MUST have a monitor hooked up to each port during boot. Otherwise your display properties will likely only show one monitor.....but once booted, trading, disconnecting, and swapping of monitors is perfectly fine.

The solution to every problem is found by being systematic and finding the "specific" problem. Try hooking up both monitors through the VGA port(using a VGA cable). If everything works out then that will tell you two things : That both monitors are functional, and that the VGA cable is fine. Next try hooking up both monitors with your new DVI-VGA cable, and if that works out then again you know the cable is fine and both monitors work.

However if one particular setup doesn't work....that can tell you exactly what the problem is.

For future reference a DVI-VGA adapter is relatively cheap, while a full cable usually costs significantly more. In this case I noticed that one of your monitors had a DVI input. It would have been a better choice to purchase a full DVI cable versus a VGA-DVI adapter cable.

Oh, and of course the easiest solution.....find the neighborhood tech geek kid...or your friend who's into computers, and get them to help you out :)

yeah you are correct. and Yes i did left click on the black monitor. but Im going to have a friend come over and look at it. Its not that I dont know what Im doing, this is a huge headache when Ive had dual monitors for the past 5 years running on windows XP.. and now this all of the sudden is going wrong.. I did a google search on this particular problem running on windows 7 and there are atleast 30 threads of people having the exact same symptoms and problems that Im having. either we are all morons, or Microsoft really screwed something up in windows 7. thanks for all your help Nick. when my friend gets here and if he fixes the problem I will post something.

and Yes i did left click on the black monitor.

Actually I meant to specify that you right click the greyed out monitor to reveal a menu. left clicking would only select the monitor(left clicking in general, in windows, only selects an item).

problem fixed... the digital dvi slot on the back of my computer wasnt working... had to install the driver for it... how lame.
