DTE Acquisition

So the Quickstream was one of the first we saw I guess but I heard there is now one from JVC with the same storage capabilities as well as a new one I saw in Videography magazine by the name of Fire Store (www.firestore.com).

DTE (Direct To Edit) Technology.

Is this "one-time" purchase better than continuously purchasing tapes or is there a fairly large margin of potential risk in using solely DTE Tech?

Re: DTE Acquisition

Firestorm? You mean the Firestore, right? They're the one with the trademark for "DTE".

The Quickstream has had some awfully bad reviews regarding reliability. But I don't think I've heard anyone complain about reliability with any FireStore product. The JVC device is actually a Firestore FS-3.

There's a new Firestore FS-4 coming out next week that looks to be the ultimate in hard-disk recorders. That's the one I've ordered and I'm betting it's going to be a very popular item. However, I still plan on rolling tape in the camera anyway as a cheap backup. Shooting HD for direct-to-edit is incredibly convenient, I've been doing it with DV Rack for a while, and a tiny portable on-camera solution like the FS-4 seems ideal. It's no replacement for DV Rack, but it's certainly a lot more convenient and we're getting it specifically for a job next month related to a web broadcaster covering a convention -- roam the floor shooting stuff, hand over the hard disk, they encode and broadcast -- nearly real-time.

Re: DTE Acquisition

Barry, Whats the Firestore going to cost when they release it?

Re: DTE Acquisition

The FS-4 40gb is going to carry a street price of about $750, and the EVS DVXUser price is a little lower than that.

There's an FS-4 Pro that'll be coming out later in the year which will be more expensive (the 80-gb model carries a retail of $1695 I think).

Re: DTE Acquisition

Oops, sorry, FireStore!

I modified it for anyone wanting to click the link.
